The start of a new year brings much hope and opportunities for growth. Our most recent EFJ posting came the day of the tragedy in Newton, Conn., as we prepared for the coming of the Prince of Peace. Today, as we hear President Obama's ideas on reducing gun violence, we share a new EFJ unit on this vital topic.
While there is not extensive guidance in Catholic Social Tradition regarding gun violence, the bottom line is clear: firearms in the hands of civilians should be strictly limited and eventually completely eliminated. EFJ will focus on gun violence and mental illness in the weeks ahead. Newtown was a moment of involvement for all of us, and we hope that by deeper exploration and reflection on the issue, you and those you journey with will be compelled to action.
Other important moments in time also are addressed in this issue. "The Tortured Christ in Our Midst" is our 2013 Lenten theme, and the first of Bob Stewart's weekly reflections is included. Jane Deren helps unfold Pope Benedict's 2013 World Peace Day message. And to prepare for a double-dose of history next Monday, Jan. 21, we present a prayer for our national leadership and prayer service built on the prayers of Martin Luther King, Jr., himself a tragic victim of gun violence.
EFJ welcomes Les Myers as the new President of the Center of Concern. Les began serving COC on Jan. 2 and has many great ideas to enhance the quality and expand the variety of resources and services you receive as an EFJ subscriber.
