Exploring at the Connecticut Science Center

Every Monday the Connecticut Science Center opens its doors to School Readiness programs in the City of Hartford. Over 20 preschoolers from YWCA Hartford Region's Growing Tree Learning Center traveled to the Science Center to explore the water exploration center.

The children had a wonderful time splashing around the exhibit while learning!  Thank you to The Connecticut Science Center and the School Readiness Council for the adventure.

The Struggle Over Colombia's Gold Rich Lands

"Women have taken on a new leadership role in Colombia as activists," Angela Epstein, a journalist and native Colombian, said while leading a discussion after the screening of The War We Are Living, the 4th movie in the
5-part PBS Series: Women War & Peace.

The film highlights two extraordinary
Afro-Colombian women who became leaders to brave a violent struggle over their gold-rich lands. The film
showcased the power women have to unify a community.
After the movie, there was a  lively discussion lead by Epstein.

This event was hosted by YWCA Hartford Region and Charter Oak Cultural Center. A free movie screening of Women War and Peace: War Redefined will be held on May 8th at 7 p.m. at YWCA Hartford Region, co-hosted with Charter Oak Cultural Center.

YWCA Hartford Region's Stand Against Racism Event

On April 27th, YWCA Hartford Region will celebrate the 5th annual Stand Against Racism. Stand Against Racism was created to raise awareness that racism still exists in our communities and can no longer be tolerated. Local organizations, schools, corporations, churches, government agencies and individuals are invited to take a Stand with us and become a 2012 Stand Against Racism site. Over 40 organizations have already pledged to take a Stand Against Racism.

This year YWCA Hartford Region is partnering with the City of Hartford and the Connecticut Multicultural Health Partnership to host our own Stand at City Hall, 550 Main St. Hartford on April 27th from 1 p.m - 3 p.m. We invite you to attend and sign the pledge to take a Stand Against Racism. Mayor Pedro E. Segarra will kick off the event followed by guest speaker, Ellen Boyton, President of ESB~Consulting and Training Associates. A multi-cultural entertainment presentation featuring local artists will close the event.
