Third grade student artwork based on van Gogh portrait lesson

When I joined Art in Action nearly a year ago, I did so knowing a few things...

... the curriculum was rich, deep and engaging for students, parents and teachers alike...

... that once schools tried the program, they almost always kept it going and that it engendered a culture of art that may not have been there before...

...Art in Action's founder, Judy Sleeth, had a passion for bringing high-quality art lessons to schools with an intensity that hasn't seemed to waiver over the 30 years since she created the organization.

What I didn't yet know was...

...the level of dedication that our small, hard-working staff and Board of Directors has for delivering the mission of our nonprofit organization...

...how hundreds of volunteers enable us to deliver art lessons and materials to schools that might not have art otherwise...

...that our generous corporate, foundation and individual donors make it possible to keep our fees low.

This incredible commitment from parents, teachers, administrators, donors, partners and volunteers has manifested itself in so many ways over this year. We have 161 participating Art in Action schools (and still counting) this school year alone. This represents over 43,000 students in nearly 1,600 classrooms! And at some point during the year we educated our 300,000th student since Art in Action began. Our volunteers have helped us prepare literally thousands of boxes of art materials. Our program team and committee have made sure that the curriculum aligns with the Common Core Standards and they trained over 1,000 parents and teachers to deliver the program in their schools.

As we prepare to turn the calendar page to a new year, I want to thank you, and everyone who helps us ensure that art thrives in schools. I know that you share our belief that the skills delivered through a comprehensive art program will stay with a child for a lifetime.

If you haven't already, I encourage you to consider making a gift to our Annual Fund to help us expand our reach and impact. As Vincent van Gogh declared, "Great things are done by a series of small things brought together."  Working together we can make 2014 a year of great things at Art in Action.

Thank you.

Rosies Workwear Fundraiser Benefits Art in Action

Rosies Workwear is designed for women who are out
in the world  getting their hands dirty and working
hard. Who gets their hands dirtier, gets more creative, and puts their heart and soul into their work more than an artist? This is why Rosies is proud to sponsor an auction to benefit Art in Action.

Multiple artists have been given a pair of white overalls as a "blank canvas" to design an original work of wearable art. View these one-of-a kind overalls
that will be auctioned online from Feb. 1-14, 2014 with 100 % of the proceeds donated to Art In Action.
Thank You Kimball Foundation

John James Audubon: Artist or Naturalist?
Artwork by St. Stephen's student based on AiA's lesson on Audubon
Fifth grade students at St. Stephen School in
San Francisco, CA recently had a discussion about Audubon's Wild Turkey, the first color plate in his book Birds of America. Audubon committed to find and paint all the birds of North America for this book. He traveled the backwoods of America paying hunters to collect specimens, which he used to study and create intensely detailed, biologically correct paintings.

St. Stephen students, and others from Art in Action schools around the country, study photographs to create realistic looking birds
and their habitats in chalk pastels. They use highlights and shadows to show the bird's form and discover interesting ways to use pastels to show texture.  This lesson is a great way to integrate art with science and history in alignment with Common Core Standards.
