Greetings!

Arts Ed Month

There's a movement afoot in the California Legislature to name March as "Arts Education Month." At Art in Action we think this would give much-deserved recognition to the importance of integrating the arts into the school curriculum. At the same time, the new Common Core education standards have been adopted by most states across the country. As we point out elsewhere in this newsletter, there are ample opportunities for integrating art into these standards that are designed to benchmark not just what students are learning, but HOW they are learning.

Art in Action has been a leader in providing standards-based art education in schools for 30 years. The depth of our curriculum ensures that students understand how to interpret a piece of art and express its meaning based on evidence observed. They learn to recognize art concepts, like color and spatial theory, then apply it creatively in their own projects. They come away from our program as complete learners. Oh, and they build confidence in their own innate artistic abilities too.

We believe we are simply the best in this field. We hope you will give us a chance to show your school why.

Common Core Standards
Student Artist Schools are all abuzz about the new Common Core Standards being  implemented. Art in Action is excited, too. The new standards open up the opportunity for more of the arts in the classroom: visual arts, music, dance, and theater.

Common Core focuses on college and career readiness. Students must be able to analyze, think critically, negotiate meaning, show evidence of understanding, think creatively to solve problems and produce work that shows their understanding. The definition of "text" has also been broadened to include "reading" works of art, dance, music, and theater.

This is what we have been waiting for. Art in Action curriculum was written to align with the State and National Visual Arts Standards and it beautifully fits in with the Common Core Standards.
