Greetings!
Is art a "nice to have" or a "need to have"? In my first few weeks as the new Executive Director at Art in Action, I've been thinking about how best to communicate the importance of visual arts education as something that students need to have in their curriculum. We know firsthand that our program strongly impacts every child (and parent and teacher) that it touches. We know that the way we blend art history, theory, and practice delivers academic benefits in social studies, history, language arts, and even math. And we know that in an ever more visual society, we need to give students skills for interpreting the barrage of images they are confronted with daily, to help them separate the wheat from the chaff. While I am an Art Historian by training, I've spent many years promoting STEM programs. Those disciplines are also vitally important, but -- as those in the technology and entertainment industries in this great state of California know -- it takes artists, designers, web and social media specialists, and clever advertising in order to turn great ideas into great products, movies, games, and apps. Adding the "A" of Art to STEM makes STEAM and STEAM skills are what will be needed for the careers of the future. Art in Action is proud to play a role in meeting this need. Please ask us how we can bring the program to a school near you. Jeffrey Dollinger, Executive Director P.S. The success of Art in Action in providing dynamic art experiences for children is due in large part to our emphasis on quality training. We provide online lessons for all licensed schools, grade-specific hands-on custom training workshops at school sites in designated areas, and group training workshops at our Menlo Park, CA offices. This year alone we have trained over 800 docents, representing more than 75 schools, and have led 49 custom trainings at 14 school sites. Our training program helps teachers and parent volunteers learn to lead open-ended discussions about art, manage classroom participation, and shows how to use the wide variety of media featured in the lessons.
