If you saw yesterday's Greenwich Time article on the state mandated CMT Science scores, then you know why we are all so proud of how our former fifth graders performed. 90.2% of them scored at or above the benchmark. Our scores were tied with Riverside School's scores and second to Parkway School, where 90.6% of their students scored at that benchmark. As I shared with the staff, it is not only the good results we enjoy seeing but the keen interest and enthusiasm our fifth graders displayed in the learning, experiments, activities, etc. that occurred throughout the year. Some of those activities were also part of the Enrichment Program the PTA provides for our students. These enrichment programs support the district's science curriculum and enhance our students' experiences. Thank you to all of our past supporters and future ones.
Some of you may have heard your children referring to the STAR math and reading tests they may have just taken. Last year, the district instituted the official administration of these tests for use in progress monitoring, instructional planning, etc. Students in grades one through five will take these tests at least three times during the school year during designated benchmark testing windows. Results will be shared with parents, although a district-wide distribution date has not yet been established.
The beginning of a new school year includes an onslaught of forms that need to be read, signed and returned to school. We are moving away from paper copies that are sent home and instead, relying on you to download forms and turn them in. I recognize it is part of a paradigm shift but I would appreciate you downloading them and turning them in as soon as possible.
Sunday, September 11th marks the anniversary of a tragic day in our country's history and one that adults will long remember. Our students were not born when it happened but it is important for them to be made aware of the day's significance. The focus for this day is now on sharing, service and community. Please take the time to discuss the importance of these actions with your children. It is befitting then, that our school community comes together this Sunday at our annual ice cream social to socialize, catch up, meet new friends, etc. Hope to see you all there.
Sincerely,
Terry Ricci
ISD Principal
