Dear ISD Parents/Guardians,
As the 2015-16 school year comes to an end, I want to take this opportunity, on behalf of the staff and myself, to say we are proud of the year your children have had and the amount of learning that has occurred. Listening to some of the students participate in their student-led conferences with you is a testimony to that learning. I was not only impressed with the content of what they shared with you, but the manner in which they spoke, which was with confidence and pride. I hope all of you have a safe and enriching summer filled not only with fun and relaxation, but perhaps with new experiences that will foster wonderful memories. Keep in mind that students can access Web-based programs such as IXL, Big Universe, and Newsela throughout the summer to keep skill regression to a minimum.
The last day for teachers is Wednesday, June 22nd. They will be busy packing up their rooms to prepare for the construction project that is beginning the very next day. The heating and air conditioning units are being replaced in the classrooms, therefore everything will have to be moved out of the rooms. Work will continue right up until the start of the new school year. The school office will be closed for the month of July as both Ms. Robinson and Mrs. White will not be here. I can be reached through email as I will be here most of the summer. In August, the office will reopen with Ms. Robinson's return. Class lists will be sent out the third week in August.
Thank you for supporting your children's education by working with them, providing them with learning opportunities, communicating with their teachers, attending school functions, making donations and contributions, etc. As they say, it takes a village. Have a wonderful summer!
Sincerely,
Terry Ricci
ISD Principal

FROM THE ART ROOM
|
Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe that school is almost out! It has been an amazing, creative year in the Art Room for all of your children. I feel privileged to have witnessed the incredible growth that has occurred both within and outside of the Art Room. Before we wrap up the year entirely, I want to make you aware of a few things...
ART WORK
Art Bags (Kindergarten); Portfolios (Grades 1-5)
If it has not already happened, on your child's last day of Art they will bring home all of their remaining projects. For students in Kindergarten, the artwork will be sent home via an Art Bag. For all other grades, students will receive an Art Portfolio. Be sure to MAKE ROOM ON YOUR WALLS! Your children are very excited to share their creations with you.
ARTSONIA
A tremendous thank you to all of the parents who were able to help support the program this year. If you are interested in helping out next year, please email me either before the end of this school year, or in the fall. Artsonia works so well largely because of your efforts. The more helpers the better!
One last thing...
If you are looking for a change of pace for the kids this summer, go see some art! Below is a snap shot of some shows in our area:
CONNECTICUT Bruce Museum, Greenwich
Enjoy an adventure into the world of animals and explore their portrayal in children's book art.
Examine how artistic depictions of Paris changed as the city transitioned from older oil and gas lamps to electric lighting. Aldrich Museum, Ridgefield Artworks by contemporary artists such as David Brooks. Artworks now extend to the exterior area of the museum gardens. Kids can also have fun making creations in the large studio area inside the education center.
NEW YORK CITY Guggenheim Museum of Art
Retrospective of Bauhaus Painter Moholy-Nagy
Metropolitan Museum of Art
Two shows of interest:
 and
MOMA *The 4th Graders just finished a unit on Gesture Drawings inspired by the paintings of Degas and this era of his prints.
Whitney Museum of Art
Walking the nearby Highline is also a great activity!

Thank you for your continued support and interest this year. It has been a pleasure to work with your children, and to watch their creativity blossom. I wish you all a restful, fun vacation and I look forward to hearing about your summer adventures this fall!
All the Best,
Mrs. Buddy

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
|
Thank you parents (and all members of the ISD community) for your support and cooperation throughout this school year. It has been a pleasure to care for your children!
A few reminders:
INCOMING 3RD GRADE STUDENTS
Notices and required forms were mailed out to parents of these students in preparation for 3rd Grade. Parents are urged to submit physical exam forms as their children receive their physical exams. Please copy all forms prior to submitting them to me.
LICE
Long breaks from school, like this summer break, are when children are at the greatest risk for lice. Parents are urged to continue to take a proactive approach to this issue by checking children for any evidence of lice daily--especially when away from home. Lice checks are particularly important after traveling. And of course, please check your children very carefully for lice before the start of the new school year.
TICKS
Ticks are also prevalent at this time of year. Please check for ticks especially after your children have spent time in grassy or woodsy areas!
Nurse returns to school August 29, 2016
Parents of children who will require medications during the 2016-2017 school year can submit the medications and the accompanying medical forms beginning on this date.
I wish everyone a safe, healthy, and enjoyable summer break. Good luck, fifth graders as you move on to middle school!

HELP REVITALIZE THE ISD CHILDREN'S GARDEN!
|
This year the ISD Green Committee is working to revitalize the ISD Children's Garden. The garden has the potential to be a valuable and exciting learning space for our children, an area where birds and insects can thrive, and a place where our school community can gather and create memories while spending time together in the outdoors.

We need volunteers to help maintain this space over the summer.
This is a GREAT family activity. Our goal is that for each week of summer break, one or two families (of course, individuals are more than welcome, too) will sign up to help out with a little garden maintenance. This includes watering, weeding, harvesting, and general upkeep of the garden.
New to gardening? Not sure if your thumb is green enough?
FEAR NOT!!! Each week a Green Committee member will be there on your first day to show you what you need to do. We will provide all the tools that you may need--including gloves!
When there are foods to harvest during your week, your family will be welcome to take some of those fresh veggies home as a thank you for your efforts!
