 PRINCIPAL'S LETTER

Dear ISD Parent and Guardians,

This week many of us had the opportunity to feel everything was alright in the world as we listened to the kindergarten students sing and recite poems for parents, grandparents, etc. under the expert guidance of their teachers.  Their angelic voices exuded pure joy as we watched them showcase their learning from each of the IB units they learned this year.  The program culminated with an invitation to view their artwork that was set up around the perimeter of the gymnasium by Mrs. Buddy, before proceeding to the cafe for a reception and light refreshments.

As I have shared in the past, during this school year the teachers and I immersed ourselves in the process of completing a self-study in preparation for an evaluation visit by the IB Organization in the fall.  It is not enough to say simply that this is an arduous process.  The teachers and I took every available moment outside of the instructional day to tackle the lengthy and thought-provoking document.  This was done with Mrs. Madoff guiding us through it step by step.  In addition to being a Distinguished Media Specialist, Mrs. Madoff is also our IB Coordinator and she deftly monitored and navigated us throughout this journey, which when looking back enabled us to reflect on our practices and seek areas for improvement and growth.  I know I speak for all the teachers to say we are glad it is completed and sent on its way.

With about four weeks left of school, there are many events planned to close out the year.  On Tuesday, June 7th there will be an informal discussion for our current grade five parents with parents of current middle schoolers to provide insight in the transition from elementary school to middle school.  This is the third year we are holding this event and it is very much appreciated by the grade five parents.  The discussion is scheduled for 9:00 that morning in the cafe.  Keeping with the theme of transitions, also, on that day, our current kindergartners will be dismissed at 12:00 so our incoming kindergartners can visit in the afternoon.   If you need further information about either event, please contact the school office for more details.

Still keeping with the transition theme, by the time you have the opportunity to read this issue, an Interim Superintendent will have been appointed for the Greenwich Public Schools.  I look forward to working with this person, as I am certain the entire ISD community does, in ensuring the district and its schools continue to move forward.

Sincerely,
Terry Ricci

FIELD DAY 2016: THURSDAY, JUNE 9
(raindates Friday, June 10 & Thursday, June 16)

Please join us on Thursday, June 9th for Field Day 2016

Field Day 2015 KSRed, white and blue ISD Spirit Wear will enliven the day on Field Day 2016! The day promises to be full of fun, physical activity, sportsmanship and good cheer. This year marks a continued emphasis on physical activity, teamwork and sportsmanship. The 3rd, 4th and 5th grades will continue to compete in games as well as our traditional races. Each class will be cheering loudly from the sidelines for their teammates, as well as other grade levels. The enthusiasm, variety and spirit of these sideline cheers will be a strong factor in determining which class earns the coveted Sportsmanship Award, the highest achievement of the day.

The day begins at 9am with an opening ceremony in the front circle to launch Field Day 2015 trophy the day. Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade will then head off to games followed by races. Everyone is invited to come have lunch, picnic style, in the field starting at 11:30. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will then compete in games and races. The closing ceremony will wrap up the day by 2:45. Hope to see you there!

 NEWS FROM THE ART ROOM
We are wrapping up a number of projects and starting our final artworks for the year. Please see a snapshot below of what is happening in the Art Room.

Kindergarten
We have been in preparation mode for the art component of the Kindergarten Performance. If you attended the show, I hope you took  time to view the artworks on display.

First Grade:
In an effort to take advantage of the beautiful trees blooming all around us, we have been exploring the life and artwork of Impressionist Claude Monet. Students have been painting outside so that they could have a first-hand view of nature. In the Art Room we have added more texture to these wonderful paintings, using found materials.

Second Grade:
We have just started learning about the colorful paper collages of Matisse. The students are using a variety of scissors and colored papers to create their own Matisse-inspired collages by overlapping shapes.

Third Grade:
To connect with their recent IB Unit "Dusting off the Cobwebs," students are designing their own money. We have taken a close look at the designs of paper bills from a number of countries and how the images chosen represent elements of that particular place. Students have come up with their own designs that will be used in a printmaking series.

Fourth Grade:
Students have been posing for one another to show an action or gesture frozen in time, inspired by the dancer-themed paintings of Edgar Degas. The students have had a lot of fun experiencing what it is like to model for their friends, as well as recreate gestures first hand.

Fifth Grade:
We are beginning to make mask sculptures. Using cardboard as the medium, students have designed masks that represent their personality and they will be re-creating them in three dimensions.
