Dear ISD Parents/Guardians,

Recently you should have received a ParentLink letter from Mr. Phil Dunn, Chief Information Officer for the Greenwich Public Schools, regarding the availability of iPads for the summer. This only applies to current 3rd through 5th graders. If you wish to have your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader bring their iPad home for the summer, then please opt into the program, which can be done by completing the liability form electronically. (5th graders will turn in their iPads to the staff at their middle school and receive their Chrome book.)

There are important things to consider before deciding if you want to have your child bring home their iPad. First, please know you are financially responsible for the iPad if anything happens to it over the summer. In addition, although there are filters in place, you need to monitor what your child accesses on the iPad. There aren't many compelling reasons for keeping the iPad over the summer, as many of the programs (IXL, Newsela, RAZ Kids) that we advocate our students avail themselves of are Web-based and can be accessed on any home computer. Also, please keep in mind that the summer is a great time to sit back and read actual books, write in journals, etc. If you have any questions about the program, please contact me.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the wonderful Teacher Appreciation week we just experienced! All the special treats and events made for a very special week allowing us to feel very appreciated. I know lots of hands were needed in pulling everything together, for which we are very grateful.

Parents of students in Grades K-4 should have received a letter from me inviting them to share information, if they choose to, regarding the class placement process which we will begin shortly. Please note the deadline of May 16th. Any information received after that date may be too late to be considered in the process.

Please look for information in this issue from Mr. Matejek regarding our Safe School Climate goal and forthcoming survey.

Just a reminder, our last early release afternoon will take place this coming Wednesday, May 11th. Students will be dismissed at 1:15PM and there will be no PTA AFTERS classes.

Lastly, I want to wish all of you a very Happy Mother's Day. Enjoy the special day.

Sincerely,

Terry Ricci

THE DLE SUMMER RELEASE PROGRAM OVERVIEW AND QUALIFICATIONS

Dear GPS Community,

We are excited to inform you that Greenwich Public Schools (GPS) will be supporting the summer learning of students who were in Grades 3-11 during the  2015-16 school year. Please note the following summer provisions:

Seniors and departing families MUST return devices: Each graduating high school student will be asked to return their device prior to, and as a requirement for, graduation ceremony participation. Please note that a student cannot buy their device due to Town of Greenwich rules.

DLE Summer Opt-In for Grades 3-8: Every student in Grades 3-8, and any family that is leaving Greenwich Public Schools, is required to return their device by Friday, June 10 (this date may vary by school based on principal/LMS decision). HOWEVER, families with students currently in Grades 3-8 who intend to continue in GPS may request that their child borrow their educational device to support their summer learning. These families must complete a DLE Summer Opt-In Form, available at this link, on or before Sunday, May 15 for each child.

DLE Summer Opt-In for Grades 9-11: Any student in Grades 9-11 will be allowed to take their device home as long as a parent/guardian has completed an updated Liability Form at the following link by June 1 for each child.

Per current student and staff exit procedures, each school's Administrative Assistant (AA) is responsible for identifying the families who are leaving Greenwich Public Schools, or staff who are retiring, resigning, or moving to a different school; creating a list of these individuals; and notifying these individuals that they must return their devices to the Library Media Center subject to the DLE Device Return Procedure (see below) prior to leaving. Please note that if a student intends to return to their home school at the closing of this year, then borrows a device, but over the summer decides to attend another school in the District, then they should simply return their device at their new school, and that building's Media Technical Assistant (MTA) will reconcile the inventory.

All families must complete a new online DLE Device Liability Form by August 26 for each borrowed device to cover usage of the device for SY2016-17. Please note that you are encouraged to resolve any need for replacement peripherals (cases, keyboards, and chargers) BEFORE June 10, as the District will not be able to provide replacement peripherals during the summer.

Families will be completely responsible for their borrowed device and peripherals over the summer. If complete responsibility is not desired, families are strongly cautioned to not participate in this voluntary program.

Seamless Summer Learning Through DLE
The DLE Digital Toolbox will be available for students' use during the summer.
We recommend preventing summer learning loss in reading and math by using the device to practice math and reading from a collection of LMS-curated eBooks. We recommend that students use IXL a minimum of 30 minutes per week, and read for their own enjoyment for 30+ minutes per day, using the access provided to
our eBook collections. The "DLE Seamless Summer Program" memo to parents provides a brief description of our math and reading offerings. In addition, students can use the device to conduct research on the Internet. All searches will continue to be filtered to support safe searching.

We hope that each child in our district has a relaxing summer, full of learning, inquiry, and most importantly--fun!

                                Thank you,

Phillip H. Dunn II (and the DLE Team)

SAFE SCHOOL CLIMATE PARENT SURVEY
Thinkers icon IB Learning profiles (caring, principled, open minded, etc.) are an integral part of the International Baccalaureate primary years program and we are always searching for ways to promote them.  As such, during the 2015-2016 school year, one of ISD's goals was for classroom teachers to assign their students a "joint" homework assignment that related to the Learner Profiles to complete with their parents.  These assignments, to be completed at least twice during the school year, required students and parents to identify a character in a book that exhibited an IB Learning Profile attribute or a District Norm.

In addition to this, Principled icon the specialists continued to provide positive communication to parents regarding their child as related to the IB Learning Profile traits, IB Attitudes and the District Norms.  These goals were created by the Safe School Climate Committee upon their review of the Safe School Climate Survey at the beginning of this school year.

SURVEY OPEN MAY 11-15
This survey will be emailed to you on Wednesday, May 11, and will be open until Sunday, May 15. The results from this survey will support the Safe School Climate Committee in directing our planning for next school year.  Please take a moment to complete this survey.
