Dear ISD Parents/Guardians,
Due to unfavorable weather and sky conditions, Astronomy Night is cancelled for this evening. One of our parents, Mr. Sundaram, has kindly offered to conduct a brief astronomy presentation and set up his telescope in our field for viewing stars, planets, etc. Unfortunately, the weather has not cooperated on the dates it has been scheduled. We will try again.
If you have not completed the survey on the School Start Time proposal, please do so today. The survey will close tomorrow. It is vital that everyone's voice is heard.
By now, you have all heard the news about Dr. McKersie's departure. I am saddened by the news that he is leaving. I have worked with many superintendents over the years, primarily due to the revolving door of superintendents that we have had in Greenwich, and feel strongly that we are losing an excellent one. He has accomplished a great deal in the four years he has been here and the staff and I wish him well.
On Monday, May 2nd, artwork created by our first graders will be on display at Cos Cob Library. This is a long standing tradition and the venue is optimal for showcasing our young artists. They are very proud of their artwork, as they should be. Please try to stop by in the next few weeks--and expect to be impressed! Thank you to Mrs. Buddy, our art teacher, who gently guides our talented students.
With the exception of a few students who need to do make ups because of absences, our third graders have completed the SBA testing. Fourth graders started their testing period this week and all appears to be going smoothly.
Lastly, the Distinguished Teacher Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 3rd at 3:45PM in the new Performing Arts Center at Greenwich High School. Everyone is invited. Please consider stopping by to hear all about the teachers chosen this year--with a special shout out to our own, Mrs. Madoff!
Sincerely,
Terry Ricci
Principal

IB UPDATE
|
What does it mean to be "international" at an IB school?Believe it or not, being international at an IB school has nothing to do with flags, foods, or festivals. It has nothing to do with the number of students from other countries attending our school, or the number of languages spoken at our school. While all of these aspects of our community are interesting and certainly help us learn about and appreciate other cultures, the focus on international-mindedness at an IB school is very different. As one IB educator put it: At the heart of international-mindedness is a frame of mind; a curiosity about the world, an openness towards things 'other,' and a profound appreciation of the complexity of our world and our relationships to each other. You don't have to be in an international context to develop this kind of mindset.
In short, students will naturally become internationally minded by practicing the 10 attributes of the IB Learner Profile: INQUIRERS We nurture our curiosity, developing skills for inquiry, and sustain our love of learning throughout life.
KNOWLEDGEABLE We engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance. COMMUNICATORS We express ourselves confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. We collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.
PRINCIPLED We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.
OPEN-MINDED We critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.
CARING We show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.
BALANCED We understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives--intellectual, physical, and emotional--to achieve well-being for ourselves and others. We recognize our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live.
REFLECTIVE We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experience. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development
THINKERS We use critical and creative thinking skills to analyze and take responsible action on complex problems. We exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions.
RISK-TAKERS We work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.
Talk with your children about the Learner Profile and you will find that it is helping to shape their perspectives on the world. As always, please feel free to send me an e-mail whenever you have thoughts or questions about the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme at ISD.

SCHOOL START UPDATE AND SURVEY
|
Dr. McKersie, Superintendent of Schools, is scheduled to present a recommendation on possible changes to K-12 school start and dismissal times to the Board of Education on May 12, 2016, 7:00PM at North Street School.
A school start time survey was sent to your e-mail address on April 18, for each household to complete on or before April 30th. It is important that you complete the survey to share your family's feedback and views on the start and end time options that are currently under consideration. These options have the potential to impact start times for all Greenwich Public Schools - high school, middle schools, and elementary schools. Language options are available on the survey.
The School Start Time Steering Committee has concluded its first series of "Informational Sessions" on possible changes to the school start times for all of our schools. A second set of Community Engagement Sessions will be held on May 23rd and 24th after the Superintendent's recommendation. A flier is attached with more details and information about the May sessions. If you missed the April community engagement sessions, you may view the "SBC Options Presentation" by clicking the link on the school start time Web page. All important documents and materials are posted and available on the GPS/SST Web site.
There will be additional opportunities for questions, public comments, and feedback on School Start Times at the May community engagement sessions and before a final decision is made on this initiative at the June 14, BOE meeting. Please visit the Web site for additional public engagement opportunities over the next few months. For more information and updates about SST, please visit the GPS/SST Web site.
