Spring Break

Dear ISD Parents and Guardians,

Our Fifth Graders have been working diligently on their Exhibition project as their "journey" comes to an end next week.  The theme this year is KIDS TALK and our Fifth Graders chose topics they were passionate about to research and delve into.  The Exhibition culminates with them sharing and showcasing their learning with our school community on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, April 5-7 from 9 - 11:30.

All are invited to attend for any part of it or all of it on any of the three days.  There are two venues.  One venue is in the Learning Commons where groups of students will formally present their learning in a "Ted Talk" format.  The other venue is in our "Hallway Gallery", where the other Fifth Grade students will present their poster boards serving as springboards for their learning.  Each board will have a QR code that you can access with a QR code reader* on your phone to hear our students' reports.  I hope you are able to see our Exhibition come alive and recognize the hard work that, both students and staff, have put in to see this process through fruition.

When we return from spring break, the Smarter Balanced Assessment period will begin.  The SBA's test our students' knowledge of the CT Core Standards, which our curriculum is built upon.  Our Third Graders will begin taking the computerized tests on Tuesday, April 19th.  Please see the schedule on our school's website or in this issue of DT.  Fourth Graders will be the next group to start after the Third Graders and then the Fifth Graders will begin when the Fourth Graders are done.  Results are available at the end of the summer or early fall.  There are practice problems available on the CT Department of Education website that I urge you to access and have you and your children work through some of the questions.  They will become familiar with the format which will help them when they take the tests. You will also get an idea of what they are being tested on.  The classroom teachers are also providing students with the time to familiarize themselves with the computer references used in the testing.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

This week our Kindergartners, First and Second Graders caught the "poetry bug" with Ted Scheu, the "poet guy".  As part of our cultural enrichment program, the PTA supported his working with the students.  They spent time with him learning about the importance of words and using the words to express their thoughts and ideas.  Thank you to the PTA for their contribution.

The tag sale will take place tomorrow, April 2nd, in our gymnasium.  You can drop things off this afternoon after 3:00.  Good luck with finding bargains.

Due to inclement weather, Astronomy Night will need to be rescheduled.

Sincerely,

Teresa Ricci
Principal
