Dear ISD Parents/Guardians,
Congratulations to fifth grader, Piper Loveless, who will represent our school at the Community Service Awards ceremony, scheduled for Tuesday, March 22nd, at 5:00 pm in the new performance center at Greenwich High School. This year marks the 30th anniversary of this event, which was established by former GPS Superintendent, Dr. Ernest Fleischman. At the time, Dr. Fleischman felt it was important to honor students who demonstrated a commitment to servicing others. At the high school level, a student is chosen by each of the five housemasters, while at the middle schools, an eighth grader is chosen for their selfless contributions. Because of their young age, a student is chosen by each elementary school to represent the school. Piper was chosen to represent ISD because of the integrity and kindness she consistently displays to others. Attending the ceremony is a humbling, but proud experience, as it is amazing to hear what these young people do and have done in their short lives. Everyone is invited to attend.
This week I have been asked by a couple of parents about the number of absences at the school. It appears the flu is making a later than usual appearance in town, along with other maladies. Thankfully, our attendance rate has remained constant, as compared to previous weeks, with this week's absentee rate averaging between 12-14 students per day. Given our total student population of 367, that number is not a big concern, as it doesn't even reflect one absence per class. In situations where there are more than several students absent from one class who have been reported ill, I often ask the custodial staff to complete an additional cleaning in the classroom, specifically targeting student desks, door knobs, etc. In keeping with this topic, many students are approaching or have surpassed absences totaling more than nine. The state's attendance policy stipulates that any absence below nine is considered excused, regardless of the reason. Starting with the 10th absence, a doctor's note is required to qualify an absence as excused. If there is no doctor's note or the absence is a result of one of the few extenuating circumstances established by the state, it is earmarked as an "unexcused" absence.
Also, related to the attendance policy is the topic of tardiness. In reviewing the numbers of tardies our students have accumulated at the end of this second trimester, there are a few with alarming numbers. Those families will be receiving a letter in their children's report card envelope informing them of the concern and the negative impact it has not only on their child, but the class as well. Please remember students should be in their classroom by 8:45 am. If this matter applies to you and you need some assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Skate Day is scheduled for ISD students on Saturday, March 19th from 12-1:30 pm at the Dorothy Hamill Rink in Greenwich. It is a fun time for all but if your children are skating, please have them wear helmets. Thank you.
Sincerely, Terry Ricci Principal International School at Dundee
