Smarter Balanced Assessment

Dear Parents of Students in Grades 3, 4 and 5:

The Greenwich Public Schools will participate in the Connecticut standardized assessments, known as the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA), for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics for grades 3 - 5 beginning in April.
Below are the testing windows for each grade level:
  • Grade 3:  April 19th - April 25th
  • Grade 4:  April 27th - May 4th
  • Grade 5:  May 5th - May 13th
You can support your child's performance on these tests in the following ways:
  • Be sure that your child has a full night of sleep before each day of testing.
  • Make sure that your child has a nutritious breakfast each morning of testing.
  • Encourage your child to do her / his best.
There are practice tests available to the public for the SBA.  Please visit the following website to access the practice tests:  http://ct.portal.airast.org/

When you arrive at this website, you will find the link for the practice tests on the right side of the webpage.
The link is titled:  Practice and Training Tests

Then, follow the steps below:
  • Click:  Take the Practice and Training Tests
  • Sign in as:  GUEST
  • Select GRADE LEVEL and click YES
  • Select the Practice Test you would like to take
If you would like to know more about the SBA, please access the link or follow the steps listed below:
Mrs. Ricci and I are offering an SBA informational session on Thursday, March 31st at 9:00 in the cafe.  At this time, you will be able to access the practice tests and become familiar with the types of test questions your child will be responding to on the SBA.  This session is open to all parents and would be especially important for parents of grade 3 students since this will be their first experience with the SBA.

 Sincerely,

SCHOOL START TIME MEETINGS

Superintendent of Schools Bill McKersie is scheduled to present a recommendation on possible changes to K-12 school start (and dismissal) times to the Board of Education on May 12, 2016, 7:00 p.m. at North Street School.

The School Start Time (SST) Steering Committee will hold a series of Community Engagement Sessions in advance of and following the Superintendent's recommendation. The sessions are designed to provide the Greenwich community with opportunities to learn about possible school start and dismissal time options and implications, and to provide feedback. In addition, the community is invited to attend Board of Education meetings and School Start Time Steering Committee meetings over the next several months to follow the development of and discussions on the options. Details on these engagement opportunities may be found in the attached flyer and on the GPS web site.

alarm clock The District has secured the services of transportation consultant, School Bus Consultants (SBC), to lead us through this very important work and facilitate the engagement sessions. Each Community Engagement Session will be preceded by presentation documents available for review on the GPS/SST web site.

The first set of Community Engagement Sessions in the series will be held in April prior to the Superintendents recommendation and will present the options and alternatives. The same information will be presented at each of the three April Sessions. The second set of Community Engagement Sessions in the series will be held in May, after the Superintendent's presentation to the BOE on May 12, and will provide an opportunity to discuss the recommendation and the plans for implementing changes to school start and dismissal times. The same information will be presented at each of the two May Sessions.

The Board of Education is scheduled to act on the Superintendent's recommendation on June 16, 2016, 7:00 p.m. at New Lebanon School.

Questions or comments may be directed to me at 203-625-7400 or cynthia_womack@greenwich.k12.ct.us
