ISD PARENT SOCIAL
|
|
|
Dear ISD Parents/Guardians,
I hope all of you had a wonderful winter break, albeit a little longer given the snow day and delayed opening.
The ALP Identification process for the 16-17 school year has begun and interested parents should avail themselves of the information, especially if they are considering nominating their child (gr. 2-5) for testing in the areas of Reading/Language Arts and/or Math and/or Science. If a student was nominated by their teacher for testing in any one of these areas or more, then parents would have received a letter by now informing them of that recommendation. However, the Greenwich school system also allows for parents to nominate their child for testing, if their child's teacher has not done so.
Forms can be downloaded from the GPS ALP website and should be returned to ISD. The due date is Friday, February 26th. Letters will then be sent to parents with detailed information regarding the date and time for the testing to take place. In general, testing for Reading or Math is about three hours each spanning three days, while testing for the Science strand takes about two hours that is done in two days. There are also public meetings being held by Mrs. O'Regan to discuss the process. Please look for details in this issue of DT.
Copies of STAR Assessment reports reflecting the winter screening results, for both math and reading, are being sent home today with our students in grades one through five. Kindergarten students will only receive a STAR report for their Early Literacy screening test only. If you recall, the district instituted the administration of STAR assessments this school year to be completed minimally three times a year for first through fifth graders as a screening measure and to monitor progress. Kindergartners took the test for the first time recently. The information is helpful to teachers as it serves as another piece of information to be used to assess a student's progress, help shape instruction, etc.
Looking ahead, we have scheduled Field Day for Thursday, June 9th with a rain date of Friday, June 10th. More information to follow.
Sincerely,
Terry Ricci

| WE NEED YOUR HELP |
Did you know that the ISD PTA invests approximately $250 per child, per year to support all kinds of amazing enrichment programs?
Pretty amazing, right?
You have the opportunity to make a substantial contribution toward that investment by donating an auction item to the Parents' Social on March 5.
Donations currently include vacation home stays, tennis lessons, spa treatments & a round of golf. We are grateful for them and would love to supplement these contributions with additional items such as tickets to shows or sporting events, jewelry, and/or collector's bottles of wine!

ALP TESTING
|
Students in grades 2-5 whose teachers have nominated them to be tested for possible placement in ALP classes for the 2016-2017 school year were notified by mail. Any parent of a 2nd-5th grader whose child was not nominated by his/her teacher but who wishes their child to be tested must submit a Parent Nomination Form by the end of the school day on Friday, February 26th. No exceptions will be made, so please make every effort to turn forms in ahead of the deadline. Parent Nomination Forms are available on the Greenwich Public Schools website and in the school office. Detailed testing schedules will be distributed once nominations are complete.
In addition to our ISD-specific session that was held February 18, Mrs. O'Regan, the district's ALP Department Facilitator, will be holding informational meetings about the ALP Placement process according to the following schedule:
- Tuesday, February 23, 2016, 6:30 PM at the Board of Education Building
- Thursday, February 25, 2016, 9:00 AM at Cos Cob Library

IB FAQs
|
Dear ISD Parents:
I am posting a series of Frequently Asked Questions about the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme in "Dragon Tales" each week. Please feel free to send me an email with your thoughts or questions.
IB PYP Coordinator Library Media Specialist What is an IB Unit? Each year, your child will participate in six IB units, each falling under one of the six IB transdisciplinary themes. The term "transdisciplinary" means that teachers will strive to teach the central idea of each unit across many disciplines. While each unit might focus mostly on one content area, such as science or social studies, students will experience certain aspects of the unit through mathematical thinking, writing, reading, language, the arts, technology, etc. There are 36 big units of study in total. Please read communications about each unit from your child's teacher and discuss with your child the central idea of each unit and what s/he is doing in class. With the emphasis on transdisciplinary units of study, does this mean our children are not experiencing as many specific content areas as they would at a non-IB school? In fact, just the opposite is true. At IB schools, children are immersed in learning and have the opportunity to go beyond what is expected. As an example, at each grade level, half of our IB units are focused on science, and the science standards are derived from district, state, and (soon) national standards. Our teachers collaboratively pore over these standards as they become available and write rich units of study that not only meet all district expectations, but go beyond them. Teachers extend the standards to all areas of instruction and enrich them with inquiry-based learning, technology, engineering, and the scientific method. When children leave ISD, they are ready to collaborate, analyze, and communicate their thinking.
