IB FAQ
Dear ISD Parents:
For your reading interest,  I am posting a series of Frequently Asked Questions about the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme in our ISD DragonTales each week.  Please feel free to send me an email whenever you have thoughts or questions about the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme at ISD.

Jeannine Madoff
IB PYP Coordinator
Library Media Specialist

Have studies been done on the impact of the PYP?
The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) places great value on external validation of its programmes, curriculums and professional development. A recent Global International Schools' Assessment study found that PYP students outperformed non-IB students in mathematics, reading and writing. Additional studies on programme impact, quality assurance, programme development and assessment research are available at www.ibo.org/research

I hear that ISD is going through their Self Study year. What does this mean?
Every 5 years, the IBO requires all IB schools to reflect on their practices in order to ensure that they are meeting the standards of the programme.  Every teacher at the school participates in the Self Study by meeting with colleagues across grade levels and disciplines to share reflections on past practice and to set goals. This is a way for teachers to realize not only how what they are doing works, but what other teachers are doing and how the school as a whole is uniting around common goals. Teachers describe this experience as "cathartic," "motivating," and "reinvigorating" and it is one of the practices that makes IB PYP schools uniquely successful.
ALP TESTING
Students in grades 2-5 whose teachers have nominated them to be tested for possible placement in ALP classes for the 2016-2017 school year will be notified by mail.  Letters will be sent on Wednesday, February 10, 2016.  Any parent of a 2nd-5th grader whose child is not nominated by his/her teacher but who wishes their child to be tested must submit a Parent Nomination Form by the end of the school day on Friday, February 26th.  No exceptions will be made, so please make every effort to turn forms in ahead of the deadline.  Parent Nomination Forms will be available on the Greenwich Public Schools website  or in the school office after the winter vacation.  Detailed testing schedules will be distributed once nominations are complete.

Not sure if you should nominate your child for ALP testing?
Please join us for an information session about ALP Identification process at 2:00 PM on Thursday, February 18th [snow date Friday, Feb. 19th] in the ISD Cafe.  ALP Teachers Ms. Craig and Mrs. Feinberg, along with Mrs. Ricci, will explain the procedures for nomination and testing and will answer any questions you might have in deciding whether or not to request testing for your child.  We hope to see you there!

Can't attend?  Or still want to know more?
In addition to our ISD-specific session, Mrs. O'Regan, the district's ALP Department Facilitator, will be holding informational meetings about the ALP Placement process according to the following schedule:
  • Thursday, February 18, 2016,  1:00 PM at Byram Shubert Library
  • Tuesday, February 23, 2016,  6:30 PM at the Board of Education Building
  • Thursday, February 25, 2016, 9:00 AM at Cos Cob Library
