Dear ISD Parents/Guardians,
I hope everyone who celebrated Hanukkah had a wonderful holiday and a good time celebrating the season. I also want to take this opportunity to wish others a joyous Merry Christmas and I wish for everyone to have a happy and healthy new year, filled with peace and joy. Safe travels to all who are traveling. I hope the vacation brings opportunities for warm memories and good times. As usual, we had a very busy week. Many of you attended this week's Winter/Holiday concert and/or Grade 4 Art Show. If you did, then you witnessed some of the amazing work our students have done under the expert guidance of our teachers. It truly was a festive and uplifting evening.
Our Superintendent, Dr. William McKersie, visited the school on Tuesday. During his visit, he observed math instruction being delivered, students working on Word Study activities, and Spanish teaching. He left pleased and impressed with his observations, as well as his interactions with teachers and students.
On Wednesday, Mrs. Irene Parisi, Assistant Superintendent, also had a scheduled visit. Her visit included sessions with the Grade 2 and Grade 4 teachers to review STAR assessment results. At her last visit, she met with the Grade 1 and Grade 5 teachers. In both sessions, teachers walked away with much more knowledge and information, as did Mr. Matejek and I.
Our newspaper club just published their first issue of The Dragon Press under the guidance of Ms. Sangermano and Mrs. Bucknoff. The student writers are very proud of their writing, as they should be. Please take the time to read the fascinating articles from the issue, which is located on our Web site.
A series of parent workshops on the topic of Digital Learning has been planned for the new year. Please see the chart below and try to attend one of the sessions to become more informed about the changes in the instructional landscape. This week our teachers advanced their own learning by participating in training on two different programs, Nearpod and Newsela, that can be used in the classroom.

AN APPLE A DAY...
|
As the holiday break approaches, here are a few "healthy" reminders:
ILLNESSES The cold and flu seasons are here! These ailments can cause fevers, coughing, malaise, etc. Children with asthma and weakened conditions can be affected more seriously. Viruses and bacteria that cause illnesses can be kept under some form of control through proper hand washing before eating, after use of the bathroom, after coughing/sneezing, after playing outside, etc. Children should also be reminded to cover up when coughing or sneezing. Please teach, reinforce, and encourage these simple preventive measures.
The need for a flu vaccination should be discussed with your child's health care provider.
SICK CALLS Parents are required to notify the school (203-637-3800) when a child is going to be absent due to illness. Please state the reason for absence, symptoms and, if a fever is present, the child's temperature. This information helps me in tracking illnesses.
Consider keeping the child at home if he/she is truly not feeling well. Please call me at ISD (203-698-6056/203-637-3800) with any questions or concerns, or if you are unsure whether to keep your child home. The "Guidelines for Childhood Illness" can also provide some useful information.
LICE/NITS Please continue to approach this issue proactively and check children at home as part of their regular hygiene routine. This condition surfaces more frequently during school breaks, therefore it will be important to remain vigilant during and after the upcoming holiday recess. Do notify me if you have treated a child for lice.
2ND GRADE
A physical exam is required for 3rd graders (prior to entry into 4th grade). In preparation for your child's 2016-2017 3rd grade school year, I will mail out the physical exam forms, along with a letter explaining the policy, in early January. Please submit the forms as soon as your child receives their physical exam. Remember to make copies of the forms before submitting them to the school.
3RD GRADE Physical exam forms are now due for students who are currently in 3rd grade. This is a Greenwich Public Schools requirement. Remember to make a copy of the blue form before submitting.
I wish you all a happy and healthy Holiday Season. As always, thank you for your help and cooperation.

"Considerations for Post-High School Planning for All Students, Especially for Those with Learning Needs or Whom Are 2E"
Judith Nedell will discuss planning for high school and beyond, with the needs of the 2E student population in mind. This general overview will provide information and ideas that many students and parents may find helpful. Ms. Nedell will also distribute a post-high school planning guide. The guide will include the application process/timelines for accommodations on the ACT and SAT. A Q & A session will follow the discussion. Please feel free to send questions to the 2E committee in advance. We will then forward them to Ms. Nedell. This event is hosted by Lydia Rouzeau and Elana Gershon, 2E Committee Co-Chairs.
