Dear ISD Parents/Guardians,
On behalf of the entire staff, we thank you for the box of delicious holiday cookies each of us received. It was a welcomed, festive treat and truly appreciated, especially during this very busy period of time. This small gesture speaks volumes in terms of spreading good cheer.
This week marked the beginning of a period of time known as an "Hour of Coding". During this time, students are receiving instruction in computer coding in the computer lab from Mrs. Madoff. This STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) activity has generated a lot of enthusiasm and excitement in the students. Please ask them about the experience.
The Winter Concert is Monday evening at 7:00 in the gymnasium. Our band, chorus and orchestra students will be performing for us. They are working very hard with their teachers in preparation for this signature event in their musical career.
I hope many of you picked up "lost items" from the Lost and Found collection when you were in school for your parent conference. Going forward, please put your child's name on every piece of clothing or other personal items. During the cold season especially, it is disheartening to see so many items left astray. It helps, too, to remind your children to try and be more responsible for their belongings.
I also want to remind you about the use of the playground before or after school. Once the students are dismissed from school at the end of the day, responsibility for supervision shifts from the school to the parent. Many students make their way to the playground, which is certainly encouraged. However, I am receiving an increasing number of reports where students are not being supervised and/or engaging in more aggressive playing. It is advised that the rules enforced during the school day are also carried over beyond the school day to ensure everyone's safety. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Terry Ricci
ISD Principal

THAT'S A LOTTA COOKIES
|
This week each ISD Staff Member received a Holiday Season surprise: a box filled to the brim with cookies from appreciative ISD parents!
Thank you to everyone who donated cookies, and to the crew who helped package these sweet treats. An extra special tip of our old silk hat goes to Ana Laborde and Kysa Englund for hosting this wonderful event.

Dear Parents, The creative process is humming along in high gear in the Art Room! Your children have been working hard on a number of projects... Kindergarten: Our youngest artists have just finished their first sculptures of the year. They have each made a pinch pot that will soon be glazed. They adored working with the clay and are even more excited to add color to their sculptures. First Grade: We have been reviewing texture, and how it can be used to make a pattern. The children are using a variety of materials to form textural patterns in the creation of clay tiles and pendants.
Second Grade: We are completing our Giuseppi Arcimboldo-inspired portrait collages. The students will finalize their artwork by mounting the portraits on colored "frames" and creating designs for the frames.
Third Grade: We have been examining the artwork, literature and life of Faith Ringgold. The children were asked to think of a special event or tradition that they share with their families, and are now working on recreating their ideas using a variety of textiles--as Faith Ringgold does with her quilts.
Fourth Grade: In preparation for the 4th Grade Art Show (see the sidebar), students are hard at work putting the final touches on their Alberto Burri-inspired artworks.
Fifth Grade: Our most seasoned artists have just begun work on sculptures inspired by Akinori Matsumori. These students will construct mobiles or stabiles using materials similar to those utilized by Matsumori to make some whimsical creations.
With the holidays upon us, please be sure to visit Artsonia.com to view and purchase items featuring images of your child's artwork. There are great gift ideas for any member of the family, and a portion of the proceeds goes to help our PTA. A number of the children have asked when they can bring their artwork home. Generally, I collect the children's artwork through the end of the first grading period. With that time now behind us, I will make every effort to send home at least a few finished pieces before the holiday recess, if not directly after the break. At the end of the school year, each student will bring home a large portfolio of their completed work. Lastly, please see the sidebar to the right for information about our first Art Show of the year. In addition to assorted works of art, each Fourth Grader has also created their own QR code. Scan the code to hear your artist describe their piece. You can download a QR code-reading app onto a mobile device to hear these very special recordings. As always, thank you for your support, your enthusiasm and your creative children! I wish you a very happy and healthy Holiday Season! All the Best, Mrs. Buddy Art Teacher
