Dear ISD Parents and Guardians,
On Wednesday of this week, we held our annual Veterans' Day Ceremony in the gymnasium, instead of outdoors, due to the weather. It was a wonderful and heartwarming, "red, white and blue" tribute to the group of Veterans that were in attendance. These Veterans represented all groups of the Armed Forces and served in combat in wars ranging from World War II to Afghanistan. We had great grandfathers, grandfathers and grandmothers, fathers, cousins and others.
Our fifth graders, under the guidance of their teachers, wrote introductions for each of our special guests, inspiring poems that captured the Veterans' courage and bravery and reenacted the "Table Ceremony." Many of the students made cards and posters, which were presented to our visitors. We all joined in proud renditions of "God Bless America" and "America, the Beautiful," led by Dr. Heikel. In all, it truly captured a humble expression of gratitude for the Veterans, while also educating our young students on the importance of recognizing their acts of commitment to our country.
The next day followed with a celebration of one of our district's Social Emotional Learning goals of "Care for Self and Others." Students were encouraged to engage in acts of kindness and pay it forward, while teachers delivered lessons in class that supported and reinforced the expectation of displaying kindness to each other.
Next week, the PTA is holding their Fall Book Fair in the gymnasium. It will be held Tuesday, Nov. 17th, including evening hours and Wednesday, Nov. 18th. The committee has worked very hard to plan this exciting event. Please see this issue of DT for more details regarding times each classroom is visiting the fair.
On Tuesday, December 1st, at 7:00pm, the PTA is holding a general meeting here at school; I will be speaking on two important topics. One topic is the school results of the 2015 administration of the Smarter Balanced Assessment. Parents, whose children took the test, may want to bring their child's test report to follow along. I will also be speaking on the STAR assessments which all students will be taking this year. Parents of students in grades one through five will receive a report of their child's fall testing at the parent/teacher conferences scheduled for early December.
Sincerely,
Terry Ricci
ISD Principal

FROM THE ART ROOM
|
Dear Parents,
A few updates from the Art Room for you. The students have been working hard on their creations and we have some exciting things coming up soon...
Kindergarten:
The students have been spending a great deal of time discussing patterns. We have been identifying patterns, and creating them with a variety of materials from inks to paint. They are especially enjoying discovering that they are wearing patterns and so are their friends!
First Grade:
We are exploring how music can affect our artwork and art making. We are learning about the artwork and life of Wassily Kandinsky. Students are creating their own paintings while listening to and "feeling" the music, as Kandinsky did. These very expressive paintings are fascinating and fun to watch in action.
Second Grade:
In an effort to connect with their IB Unit, we will be examining the whimsical portraits of Giuseppe Arcimboldo. Students will be creating mixed media artworks inspired by Arcimboldo, using a variety of healthy and perhaps not so healthy foods.
Third Grade:
Inspired by the artwork of artist and author Faith Ringgold, students have been asked to think of a special event, or tradion they share with their families. This event will be recreated in Ringgold's quilting style, using a variety of textiles and found materials, to represent the images.
Fourth Grade:
We just had our museum visit to view the Alberto Burri exhibit, which was incredibly exciting and informative for all! The students are currently creating a number of artworks, inspired by the visit in preparation for their December Art Show.
Fifth Grade:
These students have been carefully working on a series of prints that began with observational drawings of their shoes. Each student has created a series of prints that they are currently editing and refining for eventual display.
I want to thank all of parents involved in the Guggenheim visit for your wonderful help and support. From taking photos to helping the children navigate the museum, we could not have done it without you! I would also like to thank the Artsonia volunteers for their valuable time and efforts. Thanks to you the web site is brimming with new work!
As always please feel free to stop in at any time, or email me with any questions or concerns. Enjoy these beautiful fall days!
All the best,
Mrs. Buddy
