Dear ISD Parents and Guardians,
Congratulations go out to our third graders who performed "dance stories" they created for their parents and the school community. The students, in conjunction with CT Ballet of Stamford, worked in small groups with their P.E. teachers, classroom teachers and a dedicated group of volunteers on learning specific dances and used them to translate famous fables. Their performances were impressive and captured their respective story lines. What was also impressive was how evident it was they had truly collaborated well. We all felt such pride at not only how this learning process evolved but in seeing the culmination of their efforts. This partnership with CT Ballet is longstanding and serves as a wonderful model in how "outside resources" enrich the learning experience of our students. Thank you to the PTA for sponsoring these partnerships.
Monster Mash is being held this evening in the gymnasium from 6-8:30. All students should be accompanied by an adult for this PTA sponsored event. It is a time true tradition at ISD when students (and parents) arrive in costume and participate in games and activities as they dance to lively music by our own in-house DJ, Mr. Harris. Fun is had by all!
Tuesday, Nov. 3 is Election Day. Schools are closed for students but the school system dedicates this day to professional learning for our staff. At ISD, the staff will participate in webinars in the morning that are related to the district's Digital Learning Environment plan, while the afternoon is dedicated to continuing our self study for the IB Organization. This translates into taking a hard look at our IB Program and measuring it against the IB Program Standards. This self study is in preparation for a program evaluation, scheduled for the 16-17 school year.
I want to close this letter with two procedural items. As we head into the winter season and the wearing of many more articles of clothing, our Lost and Found areas tend to burst with beautiful items. Please write your child's names on any article of clothing so they can be returned easily to the rightful owner.
Also, our students have many after school activities to attend and plans are always being changed or adjusted. In order to be certain these communications are accomplished and done so in a timely manner, I am asking that you try to minimize these last minute changes, if possible, but if there is a change to please call the school prior to 2:00. As we approach dismissal time, the office is very busy and hectic, so the earlier deadline would be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Terry Ricci
ISD Principal

FROM THE ART ROOM
|
Dear Parents,
There has been a lot going on in and out of the Art Room these past weeks.
The 5th Grade was fortunate to have the opportunity to recently visit the Flynn Gallery at the Greenwich Library to view an exhibit by Akinori Matsumoto. Not only did we get a private tour of his first U.S. show, but also the artist himself spoke to all of the students. He even had us performing music using his incredible sculptures!
Last week I had a very enriching day with the 4th Grade teachers at the Guggenheim Museum of Art. We were able to view and discuss the artwork of Alberto Burri, in preparation for our field trip to the museum with the students next Wednesday the 4th. The students' experience will culminate in a 4th Grade Art Show this December 14, before the holiday concert.
As many of you may know, the Third Graders have been working away on their murals for the 3rd Grade Ballet partnership with Connecticut Ballet. The murals were completed and the children were very excited for their show! Thank you to all of the 3rd Grade parents for your generous help with the preparation of the murals.
Second Grade has been exploring the world of color through paint in the Art Room. The color mixing paintings the children have done are going to be used in the creation of a large paper weavings.
In First Grade we are finishing our study of Georgia O'Keefe and her large-scale paintings of objects from nature. The children have all carefully drawn leaves from observation that they are currently adding color to with oil pastels and watercolor.
The Kindergarteners have been working on "Night Time" collages, using a variety of techniques to manipulate their papers. Now that it is also getting darker out earlier, they have been thinking carefully about the things they see in the nighttime (especially if they Trick or Treat!).
A huge thank you to all the parents that have already graciously volunteered their time to help with Artsonia. I now have a sign up calendar outside the Art Room with days marked that I am looking for helpers. Times and days are first come first served.
I will also be in need of art show helpers as the date for our December show approaches. Please stay tuned.
Dates To Remember:
Wednesday November 4th: 4thGrade Trip to Guggenheim Museum of Art-
Monday December 14th:4th Grade IB Art Show-time tbd
As always feel free to stop by or email me with any questions. Thank you for your constant support and interest!
All the best,
Mrs. Buddy

| VETERAN'S DAY CEREMONY |
On Wednesday, November 11th, ISD will be having a ceremony to commemorate Veteran's Day. The ceremony will begin at 9:15 in the front circle of the school. If it is raining, the ceremony will take place in the gymnasium. If you or a family member is a Veteran and would like to attend our ceremony, please email me by Friday, November 6th.
Following the ceremony, there will be a reception for the Veterans in the cafeteria. At this time, some of our students will have the opportunity to meet and interact with the Veterans.
Veterans: Please bring any artifacts and pictures that you would like to share with the ISD community during this reception.
All students are encouraged to wear red, white and blue on this day.
We are looking forward to our Veteran's Day ceremony and reception. Please email me if you have any questions regarding this event.
Thank you,
Mr. Matejek

| THIRD GRADE BALLET |
Once again, ISD's Third Grade teamed up with the Connecticut Ballet to learn the IB Unit How We Express Ourselves - through meaningful movement. This year, the students took on Aesop's Fables and brought the classic tales to life through their own dance choreography. Thank you to the CT Ballet, Mr. Boland and Mr. Bragdon, and the third grade teachers for another great year of dance experience for our students. And thank you to all of the parents who made this year's Third Grade Dance Partnership Performance, Aesop's Fables a huge success. Thank you to Jill Townsend and Paula Brandes for co-chairing, Kysa Englund and Jackie Moy for creating the wonderful costumes and Stasha Healy for creating the show program. And thanks to the many parent volunteers who helped during the gym and art classes - we couldn't have done it without you!
