Dear ISD Parents/Guardians:

In this issue you will find information and a schedule for this year's Open House, which will be held on Thursday, October 1st.  I hope to see all of you there.  (Please note that my presentation will be held in the gymnasium this year.)

We have a busy week for the first full week (5 whole days) of school.  On Tuesday, September 29th, we will hold a Lockdown Drill. The format we follow was established by safety and security specialists and would go in effect should an unexpected event occur that compromises safety for our students and staff. The teachers are familiar with the format and will review it with their students ahead of time to avoid any anxiety. If you feel you need to discuss it with your child or children, please do so.  These drills are held three times a year, while fire drills are held monthly.

Also, on Wednesday, September 30th, the district has scheduled its first "School Norm" Day. The norm for the day is "Be Here," which translates into being present, physically and mentally.  We are asking everyone to wear yellow on this day to reinforce unity.

Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Romano and Virginia Richards, their volunteers, including the "celebrity scoopers," for a great ice cream social event!

Sincerely,
Terry Ricci
ISD Principal

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
school nurse logo The children have attended less than three weeks of school not counting the days off due to holidays. I am amazed at how much the children have grown and matured! As time continues to fly by I have a few important reminders:

Illness: Allergy season is here and flu season is just around the corner. Illnesses from viruses are also very prevalent causing fevers, coughing, and malaise. Children with a history of asthma and weakened conditions can be affected more seriously. To help keep viruses and bacteria under some form of control, please teach and reinforce proper hand washing before eating, after use of the bathroom, after coughing or sneezing, when coming in from playing outside, etc. Covering up coughs and sneezes should be taught, encouraged, reinforced; and is also important in helping to control the spread of illness and disease. The possible need/or importance of the flu vaccination should be discussed with your child's health care provider.

Sick calls: Parents are required to notify the school when children are going to be out ill for the day/s. Please state the symptoms and temperature (specifically the number in degrees) if any fever is present. This information helps me in tracking illnesses. Please read and follow the "Guidelines for Childhood Illness" sent home in this week's Friday folder. If you have any questions/concerns, I will be happy to address them. I can be reached at ISD (203-698-6056/203-637-3800).

Lice/Nits: Parents' continual proactive approach has helped keep this situation under control these past few school years. I am requesting that parents continue to check children at home as part of the regular home routine. Please do notify me if you have treated your child for lice.

3rd grade: Physical exam forms are due during the 3rd grade school year (physicals completed in 2015-2016 school year). This is a Greenwich Public Schools requirement. Please make a copy for yourselves before submitting the original completed forms. Many parent are submitting the forms as their children receive their physical exams.

Screenings: I will be starting health screenings in late October running into January. Girls in 5th grade will have a postural screening and all 1st, 4th, and 5th graders will be screened for hearing and vision. A follow up letter will be sent to parents of any students who have not passed the screenings. Please call me if you have any questions.

Thank you parents for your continuing support and cooperation,

Carmen M. Claudio-Albarran, RN, BSN
ISD School Nurse

FALL AFTERS
START ON MONDAY
The Afters Registration is
closed. Look for the final class list and the Good Citizenship Pledge in Friday folders today.

Classes start on Monday.  The Afters Committee wants to thank all the parents for their support and wishes all students a great fall session.

Questions? The first places to look for answers to many questions are your Afters account and the PTA webpage.  Your Afters account gives the most updated information and should be your first resource to view what classes your have signed up for, confirm a paid class, find out the status of a class, etc. Any change in schedule, such as cancellation, make up, and last date of classes will be posted in your account where you  click to view paid classes.

SUPPORT YOUR SCHOOL!
The PTA is already at 58% of its membership goal, with 54% of ISD families participating. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and our goal is 100% participation by ISD families!

Your contribution will directly fund PTA-sponsored enrichment programs and special events including Classical Café, grade level partnerships, family events, writing specialists, and scholarships.

To everyone who has already contributed: Thank you

Please complete an ISD PTA Membership Form and return it to the main office to support all the wonderful programs our kids enjoy.
