Dear ISD Parents,
We are definitely in a "new school year groove" in these early days. Teachers are getting to know students and vice versa, while classmates are formulating new social connections. At this Wednesday's faculty meeting, teachers participated in a beginning training session on a new set of assessments students in grades 1 - 5 will be taking at three different intervals throughout the school year in the areas of reading and math. These tools, known as STAR assessments, are now part of the district's assessment schedule. Students will be taking them on their IPads and the results will be quickly available to teachers for the purpose of progress monitoring of students, initiating and maintaining intervention plans and for providing feedback to teachers to help shape and drive instruction.
Speaking of assessments, we are also beginning to analyze the data and results received from the Smarter Balanced Assessments administered in the spring to our students in grades 3-5. Unlike the STAR assessments, which are earmarked by our local district, the SBA is state mandated and assesses the CT Core curriculum. This year's results mark the first official results we have since it is a new test, and will serve as a baseline. The Greenwich school district did well, as a whole, and ISD students performed extremely well in comparison to the other elementary schools in town. Our review of the results will not only include individual students, but also grade levels and school-wide performance and will yield recommendations for students and our instructional programs. Parent reports have not been distributed to schools as of this writing. As soon as we receive them, we will be sending them home.
Fifth graders will now receive their IPads on Wed., Sept. 16th (moved back a day). If you have not yet established an Apple account for school purposes, your child will not be able to receive a device. Please open one immediately, if you have not done so. Mrs. Madoff and Mr. Harris can be of assistance so please contact them if you need help.
There is no school on Monday, Sept. 14th because of Rosh Hashanah and we have an early dismissal on Wed., Sept. 16th. Teachers will spend that afternoon getting more training in implementing the use of the IPad into their instruction. Have a good weekend.
Sincerely, Terry Ricci, ISD Principal

PLEASE START SUBMITTING YOUR BOX TOPS
|

It's time to begin submitting Box Tops for Education!
Our first submission deadline for this school year is November 2.
You can either drop them in the house-shaped box in the hallway across from the school office OR turn them in to your child's teacher.
Please put properly clipped Box Tops in either a Ziploc bag with your child's name and class clearly marked OR use a submission form (coming home soon in your child's Friday folder).
Clipping Box Tops is a great way to make a difference for ALL students at ISD as proceeds from Box Tops come directly to our school. Let's work together this year to keep on clipping!
