First Day of School

Dear ISD Parents,

It has been an honor and a privilege to have led ISD for the `14-`15 school year. As the year comes to an end, I am very proud of many things. First and foremost, I am most proud of our students' growth in their academic achievement, along with all the other accomplishments they experienced.  As a school, we made great strides in digital learning in preparation for Phase 3, while also moving forward in the area of STEM with the use of our 3D printers and robotics. We transformed our media center by repurposing it as a learning commons area to support current educational pedagogy. Our IB program is alive and well, as we continue to bring rich units of instruction to our students, while supporting the IB Learner Profiles. Based on our recent survey, many of you incorporate the Learner Profiles in discussions at home for which we are appreciative. We came together once again as a community through the many events you and the PTA supported and we are grateful. Besides being an educational institution, students spend more time in school, second to home, and we want this environment to be safe, warm and welcoming.  I wholly believe we accomplished that and I thank you for that.

As I have shared, we say "good-bye" and "so long" to several key and important people who have been part of our ISD family. They include: Sra. Gutierrez, Mrs. De Masi, Mr. Piazza, Mrs. Verdier and Ms. Laczkowski. They are off to taking on new paths, whether it is teaching at the high school, moving away, trying new adventures or retirement. We are also losing Mrs. Scott to retirement after having served in our school since its inception. We will miss all of them and of course, we wish them joy, love and "greener pastures."

During the summer, please utilize the available resources on our school's website for your child. There are numerous ones that will provide practice and review and even new learning. A great math website now available is www.greenwichschools.org/page.cfm?p=11022. There is also a summer reading list on our website. It is well-documented that significant learning made during a school year is lost over the summer so it is vital for your children to take time out of their schedules and dedicate it to learning and schoolwork.

The new school year begins Wednesday, September 2nd. An information packet will be sent home around August 18th and will contain my welcome back letter and your child's class list.  Other pertinent information will be sent home during the first week of school. Please have a fun, safe and wonderful summer. It is a beautiful time to revitalize and appreciate the weather and the fun activities associated with it.

Sincerely,

Terry Ricci

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE

Incoming 3rd graders: Notices and required forms were mailed out to incoming 3rd grade parents in preparation for the 3rd grade year. Parents are urged to continue handing in the required physical exam forms as their children receive their physical exams. Please copy all forms prior to submitting them. Again--thank you parents for your cooperation!

Lice: Long breaks from school, like this summer break, are when this issue usually crops up most prevalently. Parents are urged to continue to take a proactive approach to this issue by checking children for evidence of lice on a daily basis. Please continue to make this part of the regular home routine, even when away, and especially when coming back from being away. Please be aware that routine lice screenings are no longer done in the schools.

Please check your children very carefully before the start of school.

Ticks are very prevalent at this time of year. Therefore, please check your children for this also.

Thank you for all your support/cooperation throughout the school year! I have enjoyed taking care of your children.

I wish you all a healthy, enjoyable and safe summer break. Hope to see everyone in September 2015!
