Dear ISD Parents,
Thank you to everyone involved in planning and running the annual ISD beach party. Despite the inclement weather, everyone who attended appeared to have a great time. The wind-swept rain did not dampen (pun intended) everyone's playful spirit. A tremendous amount of work goes into the planning of such an event and I am certain I speak for all who reaped the benefits, that it was very much appreciated. On a related note, as I ran to my car in the pouring rain, I came across a pair of sunglasses on the ground. If you are missing your sunglasses, please let me know.
Teachers and students are in the midst of scheduling and conducting student-led conferences. A requirement of the IB Program, these conferences afford students the opportunity to share and celebrate their academic progress with you. Research demonstrates that if students are more actively involved in reviewing and acknowledging their own progress, the gains in learning and achievement are greater. In addition to classroom conferences, our fifth graders engaged in a similar metacognitive activity this week organized by Sra. Gutierrez where students demonstrated their progress in learning Spanish. Listening to them speak in Spanish was impressive!
Congratulations to our fifth grade ALP Students who presented "Hamlet" at the GPS Shakespeare Festival this week. Our students, under the guidance of Ms. Craig, were eloquent in their portrayal of the characters they took on. The school presentation will take place on Thursday, June 11 at 9:45am in the Learning Commons.
This week, Mrs. Madoff and I conducted a digital learning workshop for parents with a special focus on Nearpod, an app that will be included in each student's "toolbox", when they receive their IPad in the fall. The purpose of the workshop was to demonstrate to parents how teachers will use this app in the classroom, along with providing a lot of information related to internet safety. The session was videotaped and will be posted on our school's website.
Lastly, our fundraising campaign for Nepal came to a close. Thank you for supporting the cause. Our school total reached almost $1,600! The funds will be presented to Save the Children earmarked toward school reconstruction.

| ISD FIELD DAY - MONDAY, JUNE 8 |
RED, WHITE and BLUE ISD Spirit Wear
will enliven the day on Field Day 2015!
The day promises to be full of fun, physical activity, sportsmanship and good cheer. This year marks a continued emphasis on physical activity, teamwork and sportsmanship. The 3rd, 4th and 5th grades will continue to compete in games as well as our traditional races. Each class will be cheering loudly from the sidelines for their teammates, as well as other grade levels. The enthusiasm, variety and spirit of these sideline cheers will be a strong factor in determining which class earns the coveted Sportsmanship Award, the highest achievement of the day. An exciting addition to this year's Field Day is the colored pinnies to be worn by each class. The ISD PTA has generously provided Red, White and Blue pinnies for every student to wear on Field Day.
The day begins at 9:00 am with an opening ceremony in the front circle to launch the day, as usual lunch is picnic style in the field starting at 11:30 and the closing ceremony will wrap up the day by 2:45. Hope to see you there!

Avoid shopping hassles, crowds, and guesswork. The supplies will be waiting for your child in his/her classroom on the first day of school. This service is provided as a convenience and is not a fundraiser.

Since they are review material, you will want to order the book for the grade level your child is leaving as of June 2015. If you have any questions about the appropriate level please ask your child's classroom teacher.

- Dragon Tales (Help design and edit the Dragon Tales weekly e-newsletter. Each team member takes 1-2 month long shifts as the editor)
- Book Fair Team (Help plan and organize the ISD Book Fair in late November/early December. 1-2 Treasurers needed, as well as general help on the committee)
- Green Schools Committee (Spearhead environmental initiatives at ISD and attend PTAC Green Schools Committee meetings to learn about other schools programs)
- Hospitality (Share your talent for cooking/provisioning and entertaining with ISD. This committee provides the refreshments for the monthly Faculty Meetings, as well as a few PTA events during the year)

This year, ISD's Strategic Improvement Plan (SIP) motto was "Elevate the Thinking," chosen to reflect
our goal of elevating the rigor and thinking in classroom settings and to build on the inquiry-based learning prescribed by the IB framework.
After reading the book Making Thinking Visible, ISD teachers have been challenged to expand and apply different thinking and questioning routines in the classroom this year. To the lovely ISD Community -
Thank you so much for your wonderful and generous book donations. The First Grade students bagged and counted well over 1,110 books!
The books were donated to the Children's Clinic at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx and will be the basis for a children's library that will serve young patients spending weeks in the hospital recovering from serious illnesses.
