Dear ISD Parents,
We have had a busy week this week while enjoying the warmer weather. As of this writing, our fifth graders are in Boston enjoying a jam-packed two day adventure ranging from visiting Quincy Market to the Planetarium and other activities in between. It is a memorable trip for many reasons, including spending the night in the Children's Museum. It is a wonderful way for our fifth graders to mark the beginning of the end to their elementary years at ISD.
Our third graders spent Thursday, May 7th, at the Philipsburg Manor where they enjoyed seeing and experiencing many aspects of the historic, colonial period they are studying in their current IB unit. While they were away, our second graders were at the Stamford Nature Center enjoying a beautiful day reinforcing their learning of plants, as part of their partnership with that institution. In all three experiences, matching classroom learning with real, interactive, hands-on learning immensely solidifies the understanding the students gain, allowing deeper connections to new learning. That is the beauty of taking students on field trips, and something our teachers firmly believe in.
This past week saw a visit from Mrs. Irene Parisi, the Assistant Superintendent and Director of Curriculum. Mrs. Parisi spent Wednesday afternoon visiting classrooms to see teaching and learning first hand. During her visit, we observed grade two math classes, grade four math classes, a grade three social studies lesson and an engineering design class in our learning commons with Mrs. Madoff, Mrs. Mink and Mrs. Daur. She left ISD impressed that the rich learning that was taking place reflected our motto for this school year, which is, "Elevate the Thinking."
On Tuesday, May 12th, our current kindergartners will be dismissed at 12:00 so our incoming kindergartners can visit in the afternoon. This visit allows our soon-to-be kindergartners to see the school and visit an actual kindergarten classroom. It is exciting for us to actually meet the next group of students who will join the ISD family.
In closing, I want to wish all the mothers a very Happy Mother's Day. Personally, I relish the role more than anything and I know you share the same sentiment. I hope you really enjoy your day!
Sincerely,
Terry Ricci

TEEN SLEEP NEEDS & SCHOOL START TIME DISCUSSION
|
PLEASE JOIN US FOR A PANEL DISCUSSION
May 26, 7 pm
Central Middle School Auditorium
SPONSORED BY GREENWICH PTA COUNCIL WELLNESS COMMITTEE
- Did you know that teenagers need 9 hours of sleep a night? But two-thirds of high school students report getting 7 hours of sleep or less a night?
- Did you know that teenagers have a different circadian rhythm than adults which makes it harder for them to fall asleep before 11 pm and waken before 8 am?
- Did you know that chronically sleep deprived teens are at increased risk of depression, obesity, substance abuse, and automobile accidents? And that more sleep results in higher grades and better attendance?
In August of 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a statement recommending that middle school and high school students delay the start of class to 8:30 a.m. or later. Greenwich High School starts at 7:30 am (with many athletic and music practices starting before then). Greenwich middle schools start at 7:45.
The Board of Education will send a survey this month to parents, high school students and teachers in the district about school start times. Come and educate yourself about this important issue!
Join panelists Dr. Dominic Roca, MD of the Connecticut Center for Sleep Medicine; Dr. Marcie Schneider, MD of Greenwich Adolescent Medicine; Superintendent of Schools Dr. William McKersie; Greenwich High School Headmaster Chris Winters; and Lisa Bogan, a parent from Wilton, CT, which made the change to a later high school start time in 2002, for a Q&A session on teen sleep needs and the impact of school start times on teen health and wellness.
