Dear ISD Parents,

Next Thursday, Mar. 12th, we will hold our second lockdown drill of the year.  It will occur in the morning and representatives from central office, as well as from the Greenwich Police and Fire Departments will be here to assist and monitor.  Teachers are familiar with the preparation process for the drill and based on the one we conducted in the fall, the students are, as well.  If you feel your child needs to know ahead of time and be reassured of the process, please have a discussion with your child as we do not want any student to feel anxious about it.

Hopefully, the third time will work like a charm in holding our parent meeting on puberty.  It is now scheduled for Mon., Mar. 9th at 9:00 am.  Teachers are scheduled to begin the teaching of this unit next week and given the sensitive nature of the topic, I hold a parent meeting to share the content of what is going to be delivered to the students ahead of time.  This allows parents the opportunity to either have a conversation with their child prior to the lessons beginning or prepare for questions that may come up after the lessons.  Nature has not been cooperative with my plan but it appears there is no snow in the forecast for Monday, so we may prevail.  The session will be recorded for parents who are not able to attend.  Please let the school office know if you need to view the video.

Several teachers will be attending an important workshop on Math Problem Solving on Monday and Tuesday, 3/9 and 3/10.  Several teachers attended a similar workshop by the same presenter last year and raved about how much they learned from it.  Although the new math program was implemented last year, it is vital for teachers to continue to advance their learning of the specific techniques and strategies to bring back to their students.  To date, we have been very pleased with the math program and find it to be rigorous and challenging for our students.

The students loved our Dr. Seuss Trivia Contest this week.  Every morning, they eagerly awaited the questions announced over the loudspeaker, as they raced to submit the winning answers.  I am happy to report Mrs. Garofalo's class was the winning class and will hold the impressive trophy until next year's contest.

Lastly, I am very happy to announce that fifth grade student, Hannah Ginste, has been chosen to be the school's representative at the Greenwich Public School Community Service Awards Ceremony.  Hannah was chosen for her unwavering character, her abundance of kindness that she displays to everyone and overall, exemplary citizenship.  Congratulations Hannah!  You will do us proud.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci
