Dear ISD Parents,
Phase 3 of the Digital Learning Environment plan will officially begin with the '15-'16 school year when all students at ISD will receive an IPad Air. Parent meetings were held throughout the week at various locations to update parents on the launching of this phase. (One of the meetings was videotaped and will soon be available on the GPS website if you were not able to attend one of the meetings.) The devices the children will receive will serve as an additional educational tool to use in accessing the GPS curriculum, along with pencils, books and paper. Students in grades two through five will be taking their IPads, which will be encased in sturdy covers, home for follow up work. IPads for students in kindergarten and grade one will remain in school. The IPads will be set up with a finite set of educational apps approved by the district. Students will not be able to access the Internet from their device and/or download apps of their choosing.
The teachers are beginning their own professional learning in not only the various uses of the IPad, but more importantly, how to infuse its use to enhance their teaching. The last two early release days, will be dedicated solely to this purpose.
The morning traffic circle appears to be moving a little better in spite of the snow and higher number of cars (students not taking the bus on very cold mornings). Unless I have a meeting, I have tried to be out there. We are trying to get more cars in the circle at one time to reduce the number of cars waiting on Florence Road, while also encouraging drivers to turn right at the end of the circular driveway. It is important for students to be able to exit their cars quickly and independently. Parents who are there to help keep the traffic flow moving will only step in to assist if they see a child experiencing difficulty. If your child needs assistance, then please consider parking your car in a legitimate location and walking to the front circle. Thank you for your assistance in this matter as it helps everyone. Can your child pass this test? During the week I heard a news story of a seven year old having to call 911. The child not only knew when/how to call but then handled the situation calmly and stated the emergency. The child was also able to state their full address to the dispatcher. In posing this question to several of our own students in various grades after hearing this story, I found many of them did not know their address or a phone number. If your child falls in this category, please take the time to teach them their address, phone number and other pertinent information should a situation arise that they need to use it. Have a good week. Sincerely, Terry Ricci

HAVE A RISING SIXTH GRADER?
|
Dear Parents:
Eastern Middle School is looking for parents of rising 6th graders to get involved in several PTA - sponsored events for next year. Specifically, 6th grade social dances, book fairs, and our new GatorWalk! These are just a few of the many ways you can get involved at Eastern. We welcome all volunteers and love to see new faces! For further information, please contact Stacy Loveless or Renee Jennings, your ISD representatives on the EMS Nominating Committee.

BOX TOPS
|
Please continue clipping and bringing in those Box Tops! Our special Box Tops collection box is still in place in the corridor, opposite the Main Office. Place properly cut Box Tops in a sealed envelope or baggie with your child's name and class clearly marked. The class that collects the most Box Tops by the end of February will be treated to a special class celebration! This is a wonderful fundraiser for all the children at ISD and it is one of the easiest ways to volunteer and contribute to the school! Let's continue working together to meet our goal of $800 this year - time is running out so please, keep on clipping! We can do it!
