Dear ISD Parents,
We are past the mid-point of the school year, which has generated many questions from you regarding the attendance policy. As you know, the state implemented a new attendance policy which our own local school district is adhering to. The policy calls for a student's first nine absences to be deemed "excused", regardless of the reason for the absence (illness, vacation, etc.).
Starting with the 10th day, the absence will be noted as "unexcused", unless appropriate documentation is provided. The number of absences is monitored closely, especially in cases where a student's academic performance is not up to par. Unexcused absences may also lead to a student being labeled truant. The State of CT defines truancy as follows: four unexcused absences in one month or ten unexcused absences in one year. It is important for all parents to be aware of the details included in the attendance policy. Please review the entire policy on the GPS website if this issue has personal relevance to your family and as always, please contact me if you need to discuss further.
Kindergarten orientation for incoming kindergarten students living in our attendance area will take place on Wed., Feb. 18th at 9:15. Parents should have received a letter inviting them to the meeting. If you did not receive a letter, please contact the school. If you know of someone who has recently moved into your attendance area neighborhood and have children of kindergarten age, please suggest they call the school.
I want to wish you a happy and safe winter break! Please find time for your children to do some reading, including non-fiction books and materials, and some math practice using IXL or other websites. With the negative impact the weather has had on the continuity of learning, any extra "academic" activity is strongly recommended, along with time to "play", of course. Enjoy.
Sincerely, Terry Ricci

BOX TOPS
|
Please continue clipping and bringing in those Box Tops! Our special Box Tops collection box is still in place in the corridor, opposite the Main Office. Place properly cut Box Tops in a sealed envelope or baggie with your child's name and class clearly marked. The class that collects the most Box Tops by the end of February will be treated to a special class celebration! This is a wonderful fundraiser for all the children at ISD and it is one of the easiest ways to volunteer and contribute to the school! Let's continue working together to meet our goal of $800 this year - time is running out so please, keep on clipping! We can do it!

Wellness Month
|
Dear Parents:
The week of March 9th, ISD will hold its annual fruit and veggie challenge in celebration of wellness month. Volunteers will be needed to make this healthy fun event a success! Please look for the genius sign up for this event soon. Helpers are also needed to prepare fruit and veggies as well as shop. This is a wonderful chance for your child to increase their fruit and vegetable intake in a school-wide event.
Gratefully Yours,
Elisabeth Weindling

DO YOU LIKE TO PARTY!!

How about planning a bash for ISD!
We are currently seeking an Event Chair and Committee to organize the annual ISD Beach Party, which will take place on Sunday, May 31.
This team will coordinate the catering, entertainment, ticket sales, and volunteers for the event. So gather some friends and make some new ones while organizing this fantastic fundraising event!
We currently have in place a Fundraising Chair who will coordinate underwriting and solicitation.
Contact Carisa Sykes, VP Volunteers for the ISD PTA, with interest or inquiries. (203) 637-7089 or isdpta.volunteers@gmail.com
