Message from the Principal -Dear ISD Parents,
We have had a disjointed week with closings, delays, early dismissals and frigid temperatures. However I want to share a "warm" special moment that came up yesterday in one of our kindergarten classes. The teacher was discussing "Superheroes" and all the attributes a Superhero demonstrates. She posed the following question to her students for their writing journal, "If I were a superhero (or if I had superpowers), who would you be (or what would you have?). The task generated a lot of excitement resulting in a variety of responses and illustrations. The usual suspects surfaced, e.g. Superman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, etc. However, one young man chose to disregard the usual ones and took a novel approach. His response was, "I would like to be a teacher." His own view of a hero was someone he sees daily helping children, making things happen and touching him personally. This classroom experience was shared with the entire staff, which made for many appreciative smiles, points of pride, warm feelings and even a tear or two. I shared this classroom event for many reasons, including using it as a springboard for discussing the Distinguished Teacher Recognition Award. This recognition is awarded to five teachers in the district who are selected for their valuable contributions to students, the classroom, the school district and community. Many of our teachers have already earned this special recognition but there are still many who deserve to. If you know a "hero" teacher who you would like to nominate, there are forms on the counter in the main office that explains the process. I would be happy to assist you in the process.
It appears the snow on the ground will remain with us for awhile, with potential for more. Students do go out for recess so boots and snow pants are necessary to allow them to play and have fun. Please make sure your children have them and the items are labeled with their names.
A separate letter is going home today regarding upcoming opportunities for parents to become more informed of the district's digital learning plan. Teachers in Phase 3 schools are receiving their IPads on April 1 (no joking) as they prepare for their students to receive their devices in the fall. Please look for it. Have a good week. Sincerely,
Terry Ricci

FEBRUARY IS FALL IN LOVE WITH BOOKS MONTH
|
Be a Valentine...Love Your Learning Commons
Give the perfect Valentine gift this year: A book given to the ISD Learning Commons in your child's name will last for years to come! Mrs. Madoff and Mrs. Robbins have pre-selected books that would be perfect additions to our collection. They will be on display in the Learning Commons during the month of February.
When you send in a donation ($5, $10, or $15), the Learning Commons staff will help your child pick out a book from the display that will be added to our collection. Alternatively, you can stop by the Learning Commons with your child and peruse the selections together. We are open before and after school (8:00 am - 3:30 pm).
A nameplate (sticker with a dedication) will be affixed to your donated book. Your child will be the first to check the book out to enjoy at home!
A form from the Learning Commons will be sent home this week with your child with all the information.
Please contact the Learning Commons if you have any questions.

HAVE A RISING SIXTH GRADER?
|
Eastern Middle School is looking for parents of rising 6th graders to get involved in several PTA-sponsored events for next year. Specifically, 6th grade social dances, book fairs, and our new GatorWalk! These are just a few of the many ways you can get involved at Eastern. We welcome all volunteers and love to see new faces! For further information, please contact Stacy Loveless (loveless.stacy@gmail.com) or Renee Jennings (rkjennings.ct@gmail.com), your ISD representatives on the EMS Nominating Committee.

BOX TOPS
|
Please continue clipping and bringing in those Box Tops! Our special Box Tops collection box is in the corridor opposite the Main Office. Place properly cut Box Tops in a sealed envelope or baggie with your child's name and class clearly marked. The class that collects the most Box Tops by the end of February will be treated to a special class celebration! This is a wonderful fundraiser and it is one of the easiest ways to volunteer and contribute to the school! Let's continue working together to meet our goal of $800 this year - time is running out so please, keep on clipping! We can do it!

FROM THE ART ROOM
|
Don't forget to check for new artwork on Artsonia weekly. We have uploaded a variety of warm-hearted valentines just in time to chase away the winter chill. Please enjoy the latest efforts of our ISD artists.

DO YOU LIKE TO PARTY?!
|
How about planning a
bash for ISD?
We are currently seeking an Event Chair and Committee to organize the annual ISD Beach Party, which will take place on Sunday, May 31.

This team will coordinate the catering, entertainment, ticket sales, and volunteers for the event. So gather some friends and make some new ones while organizing this fantastic fundraising event!
We currently have in place a Fundraising Chair who will coordinate underwriting and solicitation.
Contact Carisa Sykes, VP Volunteers for the ISD PTA, with interest or inquiries.
