A Message from the Principal -
Dear ISD Parents & Guardians,
On behalf of the entire staff, I want to send heartfelt wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year. Thank you also for the holiday treats, flowers and food donations to Neighbor to Neighbor; they were all very much appreciated.
This week's cold weather has prompted me to remind you about appropriate attire for students during the winter season. Please be sure your children have gloves, hats, scarves, heavy winter jacket, etc., necessary for battling cold weather when they are outdoors for recess. If there is snow, boots and snow pants are also necessary. They do go outside for recess on most days, even if it is for a shorter than usual period of time. However, outdoor recess is canceled completely if the temperature is 15 degrees or lower.
Thursday, January 15th will be the next day in the district's promotion of social emotional learning. This day is earmarked "Be Honest Day" and teachers will engage students in a variety of lessons focused on the concept of honesty. In honor of the day, we are asking all students to wear blue in support of this character trait and as a gesture of unity.
In this issue of Dragon Tales, please look for the testing schedule of the Smarter Balanced Assessments to be administered in the spring to our third, fourth and fifth graders and will be entirely computer-based. Although there may be some minor adjustments or tweaking of the schedule, we need to work around time periods established by the state and local district. Last year, we participated in the field test but no school or individual results were distributed. It is my understanding, at this time, that this year's administration is the "real thing" and results will be available for staff and parents.
Also, in this issue, please look for Mrs. Madoff's announcement of an after school activity for students in second through fifth grades in our Makerspace area on Thursday afternoons. This will be a wonderful opportunity for students to explore the possibilities that our 3D printers offer.
Lastly, kindergarten orientation for students living in our attendance area who will be attending kindergarten this fall is scheduled for Wednesday, February 18th at 9:15 am. Please note the date if you have a child entering kindergarten this fall or know of someone who does. If you are a magnet family, siblings are the first priority so we hope to accommodate all incoming kindergarteners whose siblings already attend ISD, although it is not a guarantee. (I won't know for certain until the spring.) However, if history repeats itself, we have always been able to welcome siblings so please plan on attending. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Terry Ricci

ANNOUNCING THURSDAYS IN THE MAKERSPACE!
|
Starting Thursday, January 22nd, the ISD Makerspace will be available for students in Grades 2-5 to work on their own 3D printing projects, computer coding programs, and robotics every Thursday from 3:15-4:15. Under the supervision of Mrs. Madoff, students with parent permission will be able to use Tinkercad, Thingiverse, Hour of Code, and Khan Academy to explore building, engineering, and problem solving.
There will be a limit of 10 students each week. Since we expect a high level of interest, spots each week will be filled on a
first-come-first-serve basis.
Parents will need to send Mrs. Madoff an email between Monday and Wednesday each week giving their permission for their child to stay after school. Only one week at a time will be scheduled. Mrs. Madoff will respond with a confirmation reply or a notification that the session is filled. This system may be "tweaked" in the future to ensure that all students who want to participate have an opportunity.
Prompt pickup at 4:15 will be appreciated.
We are also looking for Lego pieces, old electronics, and tools to add to our Makerspace. Please see the flyer below for more information.

FROM THE ISD NURSE

Happy New Year 2015! Hope everyone had a fun filled holiday break.
2nd grade: A physical exam is required for 3rd (before entry into 4th grade). I will soon be mailing out these forms for physical exams to be completed for the 2015-2016 school year.
3rd Grade: The majority of parents have already submitted the required physicals and 16 are missing. Thank you parents for your cooperation! I will be notifying those parents who have yet to submit the required physicals exam forms.
Lice: Vacation break is over and I am urging parents to continue to take a proactive approach in helping to control this condition. Please continue to check your children for evidence of lice/nits on a daily basis as part of the daily home routine. I am requesting parents notify me if a child has been treated for lice/nits even if over the weekend.
Influenza, Viruses, and Bacteria: Please continue to monitor your children for any colds that are not improving and for sign/symptoms of the flu. If worsening, then please do not hesitate to consult with the doctor. Any absences should be reported daily to the school attendance line or the school secretary with information about symptoms and if any fever present. When reporting fevers, please indicate the degree that shows when a thermometer is used. This helps me in keeping track of illnesses in the school. Encouraging good hand washing, covering up coughs and sneezes, etc., goes a long way in the control of the spread of diseases and viruses. Please continue to reinforce these practices at home.
As always, again, thank you for your help and cooperation, Carmen M. Claudio-Albarran, RN (Mrs. "A")

Join the PTA Nominating Committee!
We are currently seeking volunteers for the ISD PTA Nominating Committee. This spring, the Nominating Committee will work together to identify and recruit volunteers to lead the 2015-2016 PTA programs. The committee will meet approximately 4 times between March and June, and members will also work independently on their own time.
Take this opportunity to learn more about the PTA and help the PTA broaden its network of volunteers.

BOX TOPS
|
Happy New Year! Please continue clipping and bringing in those Box Tops! Our special Box Tops collection box is still in place in the corridor, opposite the Main Office. Place properly cut Box Tops in a sealed envelope or baggie with your child's name and class clearly marked. The class that collects the most Box Tops by the end of February will be treated to a special class celebration! This is a wonderful fundraiser for all the children at ISD and it is one of the easiest ways to volunteer and contribute to the school! Let's continue working together to meet our goal of $800 this year - time is running out so please, keep on clipping!
We can do it!
