Fun Run & Tag Sale

Dear ISD Parents/Guardians,

My reminder last week about no dogs allowed on school grounds during school hours was very timely. This week a child suffered a serious facial bite at another elementary school during dismissal time. Although I know dogs are important members of some families, it is essential to acknowledge that their behavior can, at times, be unpredictable, especially where there is a lot of activity. For the safety of all, I appreciate your compliance on this issue.

Next Wednesday, September 17th is our first early release afternoon. All students will be dismissed at 1:15 so teachers may participate in new learning. (The OGRCC program is open for child care purposes.) That afternoon most of the teachers will be trained in the spelling program, Words Their Way, which will be implemented in all K-5 classrooms this year. (More details to come.) Specialists (P.E., Art, Music, etc.) will participate in professional development opportunities as well.

Last Sunday, we held our annual ice cream social which drew a huge turnout. It was rewarding to see students and parents connecting with each other and having fun. School spirit was in high gear! Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Romano who spearheaded the successful event and to the "celebrity scoopers" who had fun "dishing it out."

This week also saw our first Classical Cafe of the school year and it was a big hit based on the singing and dancing that went on. Thank you to Mrs. Sykes and her committee for planning a fun lunchtime experience. Have a great week.

Sincerely,

Terry Ricci

ICE CREAM SOCIAL

ice cream social 2014

Many thanks to everyone who came out on Sunday afternoon to spend time together at the Ice Cream Social.

It was the perfect afternoon for our families and students to experience the feelings of welcome and belonging that make ISD such a special place.

We would especially like to thank Lori and Joe Romano who ran the event and all of our celebrity scoopers who attended and helped with the very important task of distributing ice cream to so many smiling faces. Many thanks to Toni Monteiro for taking pictures as well.

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE

school nurse logo

The children have attended three weeks of school already! Time flies quickly and I have a few important reminders:

Illness: We are heading into flu season and the news media has been talking about a "virus" going  through many states that is affecting children, especially those with asthma, and the elderly. To help keep viruses and bacteria under some form of control, please teach and reinforce proper hand washing before eating, after using the bathroom, after coughing or sneezing, when coming in from playing outside, etc. Covering up coughs and sneezes should be taught, encouraged, reinforced and is important in helping to control the spread of illness and disease.

The possible need/or importance of the flu vaccination should be discussed with your child's pediatrician.

Sick calls: Parents are required to notify the school when children are going to be out for the day/s. State the symptoms and temperature (specifically the number in degrees) if any fever is present. This helps in tracking illnesses.

Please read and follow the "Guidelines for Childhood Illness" sent home in this week's Friday folder. If you have any questions/concerns, I will be happy to address them. I can be reached at ISD (203-698-6056/203-637-3800).

Lice/nits: Parents' continual proactive approach helped keep this situation under control last year. I am requesting that parents continue to check children at home as part of the regular home routine. Please notify me if you have treated your child for lice.

3rd grade: Physicals exam forms are due during the 3rd grade school year (physicals completed in 2014-2015 school year). This is a Greenwich Public School requirement. Please make a copy for yourselves before submitting the original completed forms.

Screenings: I will be starting health screenings in October running into January. Per the new state requirements: Girls in 5th grade will have postural screening and all 1st, 4th, and 5th graders will be screened for hearing and vision. A follow up letter will be sent to parents of any students who have not passed the screenings. Please call me if you have any questions.

Thank you parents for your continual support and cooperation,

Carmen M. Claudio-Albarran, RN, BSN

SCHOOL PICTURE DAY: SEPTEMBER 16

camera School picture day is Tuesday, September 16.

You will receive your child's portraits approximately 3 to 5 weeks after picture day. There will be retakes for absent students. Continue to check Dragon Tails for the date.

JOIN THE ISD PTA AND WIN A SWAG BAG!

swag bag The 2014-2015 Membership Drive is officially underway! Every two weeks we will hold a raffle and if you've made a donation your name will automatically be entered into each raffle. The winner will receive a Vineyard Vines bag filled with ISD swag such as t-shirts and other gear, mugs and water bottles and other great stuff.

The Noakes Family was our first winner last week! Please check back next Friday for the second winner, and remember to make your donation now.

Please complete a  Membership Form and return it to the main office at your earliest convenience.

This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and our goal is participation by 100% of ISD families! Your contribution will directly fund PTA-sponsored enrichment programs and special events including Classical Café, grade level partnerships, family events, writing specialists and scholarships--to name just a few.
