Dear ISD Parents/Guardians,
There is nothing more rewarding than standing at the glass doors of the school and seeing happy, smiling faces eager to enter the school to begin a new school year. That is what several staff members and I experienced on Tuesday morning, as we opened the front doors of the school to welcome the new year. The opening was smooth as students (and parents) made their way to their new classrooms and met their new teachers. Superintendent of Schools, Dr. McKersie, stopped by, as did Asst. Superintendent, Ms. Irene Parisi. Board of Education member, Peter Sherr, also came by to extend his best wishes.
Speaking of visitors, we are welcoming some very special visitors next Thursday, Sept. 4th. Forty-five students and their teachers from the Doshisha International Academy in Japan are traveling to the United States and ISD is on their itinerary, as one of the schools they will visit. The teachers and I are planning some special activities that our own fifth graders and the visitors can engage in together. To prepare for this visit, our students started writing to their "pen pals" in Japan last year so they are very excited to meet their pals face to face.
Open House is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 2, for Kindergarten and grades 2 through 5. A schedule of the evening will be coming home in a few weeks. Grade one teachers will hold their Open House presentations on Monday, September 22, due to a conflict resulting in the special arrangement. Again, more details are forthcoming but I wanted to get the dates out to you.
In the summer mailing you received prior to the start of school, information was included regarding the new attendance policy. This policy is in place and there are important changes that impact everyone. Please take the time to read the letter in your mailing or research it on the GPS website.
Lastly, much information about school happenings goes home through issues of Dragon Tales. As we begin this new school year, I hope you get in the habit of reading it weekly to help keep you informed.
Sincerely,
Terry Ricci

On behalf of the PTA Executive Board, we would like to welcome everyone to the start of another exciting school year at ISD. A very special welcome to all our new families and students: We hope you find ISD to be a great place to grow, learn and make new friends.
The goal of the ISD PTA is to enrich the school experience of every student, support our teachers and foster a special community for our families. We are a 100% volunteer organization and funded completely by the generosity of our families. We invite your family to become a 2014-15 member and volunteer with us in whatever way works for you. Whatever your interest, special skill or available time, there is always something you can do to support ISD.
We are looking forward to a great school year!

For the safety of the children, please remember the following when dropping off children in the front circle:
- Students should only exit on the passenger side of the vehicle and never cross in front of a car.
- If you need to assist your child please park on Florence or MacArthur Roads and walk with them.
- Drivers remain in their cars at all times.
- To help ease traffic flow, please turn right when exiting the traffic circle.

Mrs. Ricci and the Executive Board have been working with various Town departments over the summer to improve the outdoor space. The blacktop has been resurfaced and the new playground equipment has been ordered. We will share updates in future "Dragon Tales."
Below is a photo of the new equipment that will be installed as voted by the kids this past June.
