Dear ISD Parents,
The staff and I are very proud of our fifth graders for conducting a successful IB Exhibition. In addition to the new learning they acquired on their specific topic, there were many other skills they learned throughout the process. The tangible ones centered mainly around research skills, which by the quantity of the content they shared with the audience, were significant. Some of the not so tangible skills, but just as important in the continuum of learning, include working with others in a group and making decisions collaboratively, learning to compromise, tapping into their creative outlets, speaking and presenting in front of an audience just to name a few. Visitors (outside of parents) were extremely impressed with the caliber of the presentations and the poise our students demonstrated. Thank you to their teachers, mentors and all of you for supporting them on this journey.
Currently, we are in the throes of the transition process with the staff from Eastern Middle School as we prepare our fifth graders for moving on to sixth grade. There are many steps involved, as we all recognize the significant jump shifting from elementary school to middle school.
This spring a group of students in grades three, four and five under the guidance of Mrs. Millspaugh, Ms. Sangermano and Mr. Harris collaborated on "publishing" the first issue of our newspaper, the Dragon Press. These students wrote articles on a variety of topics using their creative juices and learning some editing along the way. "Writers" will receive a hard copy, but please look for the electronic version on our website. Enjoy reading!
Looking ahead for parents of our current kindergartners - your children will be dismissed early (12:00) on Wednesday, May 14th so our kindergarten teachers will have the opportunity to meet our incoming kindergartners who will be visiting that afternoon. If you know of anyone who has moved into our attendance area and has children entering kindergarten (or any other grade), please encourage them to contact the school to register for the 2014-15 school year.
Sincerely, Terry Ricci

NATIONAL SCREEN FREE WEEK MAY 5 - 11
|
Next week is Screen Free Week! It is an international celebration where families make a conscious effort to cut back on entertainment media and avoid screen time. Screen Free Week is a great time to reflect on the amount of screen time you and your kids consume daily and to be mindful of the effect that it has on you and your family. Here are some ideas for what to do when your screens are off:
- Get outside! Go for a walk, take a hike or ride around Tod's Point.
- Read - maybe pick a favorite book to read aloud or just spend time reading individually together.
- Family game night!
- Write letters to distant family members, classmates or even your teacher. Everyone loves to get mail!
- Create - paint a family picture together, have a drawing night, or make a new recipe together.
- Plant a vegetable garden or field of flowers.
- Volunteer - visit a local food bank, play cards with someone at a retirement home, or make loom band bracelets for your neighbors... if you want to donate loom band bracelets visit here.
To learn more about the week and how it got started you can visit here.
