Dear ISD Parents,
Thursday, March 27th, was Friendship Awareness Day. ISD teachers scheduled a variety of activities throughout the day to celebrate and showcase the importance of the day. Students in Mrs. Martin's class spent time with the students in Mrs. Garofalo's class sharing books and drawing pictures. The bulletin board outside of Mrs. Garofalo's classroom displays pictures of the time spent together. Mrs. McAuley read a special story to her students about kindness and then paired the students with students outside of their current circle of friends. Their task was to interview their "new friend" and then present their new friend to the class while sharing information they learned from their interview. Teachers hope the conversations and activities that took place are springboards for students to look "beyond" their inner circle in expanding their friendships.
This past Tuesday, Superintendent Dr. McKersie, visited ISD and read to two kindergarten classes, Mrs. Freeda's class and Mrs. Peters' class. He chose to read the book, The Napping House, which many students were familiar with. The students truly enjoyed the very tall man reading to and interacting with them. He, in turn, seemed to relish engaging with them and reacting to their spontaneous responses. He is returning next week to read to Ms. Shane's class, as well as to the third graders.
Tuesday was also the day the district held the Community Service Award Ceremony. Everyone should be required to attend this special ceremony, which honors young people and what they do in "giving back". The high school and middle school students exemplify the IB concept of "taking action" with a myriad of activities they initiate or take part in. It is humbling to hear what these students do in their "spare time". The elementary schools are recognized for their collective work in community service and are fertile grounds for future honorees. Fifth grader, Charlie Decker, represented our school well. Congratulations Charlie!
Sincerely, Terry Ricci

ISD PTA General Meeting April 8th at 6:30pm
|

The General PTA Meeting on April 8th will be followed at 7:00pm with a special presentation
by Dr. Julia Trebing on
"Positive Parenting".
Due to the generous support of ISD families, the ISD PTA is in a position to move forward with the outdoor play space enhancements, a project that was approved by the General Membership in June 2013. The PTA Executive Board has approved a spending request of $55,000 which requires General Membership approval. If authorized by the General Membership, the purchase will need to be approved by various Town governing bodies which may include the Board of Education and the RTM. It is our intention that the children have a voice in selecting the equipment that is purchased, however this will only be done once the necessary approvals have been received. The General Membership will also vote on proposed amendments to the ISD PTA By-Laws. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact Vera Merrill or Patricia Carey, ISD PTA Co-Presidents.

FRUIT & VEGGIE
CHALLENGE UPDATE
|
We would like to compliment all the students who participated in Fruit & Veggie Challenge.
They all did a fantastic job completing their food logs. We were very impressed with the variety and number of fruits and vegetables the students tried during the challenge. We encourage everyone to continue trying new fruits and vegetables; you never know what might be your new favorite.
Congratulations to Max L., the winner of this year's Fruit & Veggie Challenge, who won a gift certificate to Chilly Bear, for the wonderful job he did.
We would like to thank Mike's Organics for donating apples to the ISD for the Fruit & Veggie Challenge.
Finally, thank you to all our parents for encouraging your children during this challenge. Keep up the good work.
