Dear ISD Parents,
Report cards are going home this week. Please take the time to review it carefully and if appropriate, given the age of your child, sit down and review it with them. I like to suggest that parents encourage their children to work on a goal they can focus on in the new trimester, based on the information from the report card. It is an important first step in taking ownership for self-improvement and self-monitoring, an important skill in a child's development.
As a reminder, the numerical grade of 3 on the report card reflects successful performance with grade level expectations of that standard. Embedded in each standard are specific objectives that were taught during this second trimester. Your child's grade indicates their accomplishment of those objectives taught during this period. Students who receive a 2 on a standard indicate some work needs to be done with them to bring about more progress. Contact your child's teacher if you have any questions or request a conference if there are issues that require a lengthier discussion. If there are 1's on the report card, you should have already had some contact with the teacher or school and steps put in place to address the situation.
Our fifth graders took the Science CMT this week. Results will likely be sent from the middle school in the fall. They will be taking the grade 5 Transition Math test on April 1 and 2 which will help determine their math class placement in sixth grade. The test will be completed on the computer. We have already begun the communication process with Eastern Middle School so the staff there can begin to plan accordingly for our students' arrival as we transition them to sixth grade.
This week our second graders went to the Botanical Gardens as part of their partnership with that institution. It was their second trip there which supports their IB unit on plants. In addition to hearing a lot of information from the experts there, they had the opportunity to visit the native plant gardens. The district's Science Instructional Coach joined them for a part of their trip as she is working closely with our grade two teachers on refining the goals and objectives of this science unit. All exciting work! Have a good week.
Sincerely, Terry Ricci
