Dear ISD Parents,

This week the fifth grade Exhibition process was launched. The Exhibition is a required IB program component that our students must complete at the end of their fifth grade year. It is an exciting process for them that will take them through several stages of new learning, including conducting research on topics that interest them, note taking and planning a creative outlet to showcase their new learning. During this process, they will be working in small groups comprised of students from the three fifth grade classrooms. In addition, they will be assigned to a mentor (staff member) who will offer advice and guidance. A meeting for fifth grade parents to hear more about the Exhibition is scheduled for Thursday, March 13th at 9:00 am in the media center. The Exhibition will be held April 29th, 30th and May 1st. Everyone is invited to come and see some of the groups present. Look for more details in the weeks to come.

Next week, the ISD Wellness Committee is presenting several activities in recognition of Wellness Week. Parents are volunteering to distribute fruits and vegetables to students during their lunch period as a means of possibly introducing them to new food products. We have been doing this activity for several years now and it has been well received by both students and parents. In addition, this year we are adding an exercise component to our morning routine. Mr. Boland and Mr. Bragdon, our physical educations teachers, have created an exercise segment which we will all participate in as a way to "rev up" our bodies and get ready for the school day. Also, Mrs. Teresa Fellows will conduct a presentation for parents on "The Highs and Lows of Sugar" on Tuesday morning at 8:45 in the school cafeteria. Lastly, one of our ISD parents, Courtney Kane, is teaching a spinning class that is open to all ISD staff and parents, which will be held at Sportsplex next Saturday, March 15th at 10 am. Please email Mr. Boland at: jeremy_boland@greenwich.k12.ct.us, if you are planning to attend.

One could say another event scheduled for next week that would support "Wellness" is the GHS Jazz Ensemble concert. It is scheduled for March 13 at 6:30 pm in our media center and it promises to be a wonderful musical experience for families to enjoy.

Thank you to Maria Merrill and Stacy Loveless and their "reading volunteers" for another successful "Read Aloud Day" which occurred this week on Wed., March 5th. Parent volunteers came in and read a variety of books to our students during each of the lunch periods. The students appeared mesmerized as they enjoyed the literary experience while eating. It seemed to be the best of both worlds. Have a good week.

Sincerely,

Terry Ricci

fruits and veggies
Next week, the children will participate in the Fruit and Vegetable Challenge, during which they will have the opportunity to sample fresh fruits and veggies during their lunch periods. At the end of the week, after recording all the fresh produce they have consumed, a prize will be awarded. This is a great way to remind the students how yummy fresh fruits and veggies are and their many health benefits. See the flyer below for more information and a log to fill out at home.

Please sign up HERE to help during a lunch wave. Volunteers are still needed during many lunch blocks.

WORLD READ ALOUD DAY

world read aloud day 2014

The PTA Outreach Committee would like to extend a warm and enthusiastic thank you to the parents who read to the students in celebration of World Read Aloud Day on March 5.

Maria Pietrobon, Jopi Shen, Etsuko Tulloch, and Ann-Caroline Schraa each shared stories relating to their homeland during lunch on Wednesday. The students were all interested and joyful to have a few minutes to sit back and enjoy the pleasures of being read to. World Read Aloud Day celebrates the power of words and creates a community of readers taking action to show the world that the right of literacy belongs to all people. A big thank you also to Stacy Loveless for helping to set up and coordinate the event.
