Dear ISD Parents,
I hope this letter finds you well and that you enjoyed different activities during our break other than shoveling snow. At this point in time, we have used the five snow days allotted in our calendar and the last day of school is now Friday, June 20th. I am not certain if there are more snow days what the decision will be as to whether days will be taken from the April break, which is the current plan, or added to the end. A lot depends on how many more, if any, snow days will occur. I will keep you posted.
Speaking of snow days, when we have a snow day, the lunch that is served on the day we return is the lunch menu from the snow day. For example, we had a snow day on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the lunch items served for hot lunch were the ones scheduled for Tuesday. Thursday's lunch was Wednesday's lunch, etc. This information is important, especially for those of you monitoring your children's lunch because of food allergies.
As you know our third, fourth and fifth graders will be taking the new SBAC test (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) this spring. The test measures the students' learning based on the Common Core Standards. The test is to be completed entirely electronically through the use of our computer lab and laptop carts. This year's test is a field test as we will, in essence, be "testing the test." The teachers and I are working on developing a testing schedule which will be shared with parents once finalized. Although we are not looking to add additional school events during this period, we expect to follow our regular school routines and proceed with "business as usual" as far as learning and instructional programs are concerned. School life will not stop because of this test, although we are eager to see how it will unfold, given that we are dealing with not only a brand new test, but a new administration of the test.
I am excited to share that we are offering a newspaper writing activity to our third, fourth and fifth graders starting the first week of March. Mrs. Millspaugh, gr. 3 teacher, will be overseeing the morning program, with Mr. Harris helping with the publishing aspects of it. More information will be forthcoming next week, so please look for it to come home. Students will meet Monday and Tuesday mornings from 7:45 to 8:30. (If students cannot commit to both mornings, attendance on one morning is acceptable.) Although open to our older students only, the "newspaper" will include contributions from our younger students as well. It will be a great way to showcase our students' writing skills and creativity.
Speaking of writing, Mr. Donato D'Albis (Mr. D), writing consultant, will be here next week to work with our third, fourth and fifth graders. He will also do a parent presentation on Thursday morning, 2/27 from 9 to 9:45, when he will discuss the importance of vocabulary, along with the reading to writing connections. He is an enthusiastic presenter so I would urge you to attend if your schedule allows.
Sincerely,
Terry Ricci

HOST FAMILIES ARE NEEDED
|

Saturday April 5 is our annual Travel the World Social. We are looking for four families to host this fun evening for parents and teachers of ISD.
Last year was a blast considering all the homes were within walking distance and we would love to do the same this year. So talk to your ISD friends and neighbors and be part of this fantastic event!
Please contact Ann-Caroline van der Ham to see you how you can help or if you have questions/suggestions. See the flyer below for further details.

FRUIT AND VEGETABLE CHALLENGE
|
Once again the children will participate in the Fruit and Vegetable Challenge the week of March 10-14. During this week the children have the opportunity to sample fresh fruits and veggies during their lunch periods. At the end of the week, after recording all the fresh produce the children have consumed, a prize will be awarded. This is a great way to remind the students how yummy fresh fruits and veggies are and their many health benefits. Please sign up HERE to help during a lunch wave.

I would like to outline the Spring 2014 schedule for the ISD Band:
The 4th grade band will join the 5th grade band for three Friday morning rehearsals between February and May (please see schedule below). These will be in preparation for the spring concert (Tuesday, May 13). These three rehearsals are mandatory. If students miss more than one of these three rehearsals (for unexcused reasons), they will not be permitted to participate in the spring concert.
I will be waiting at the music room (Dr. Heikel) door in the front circle to let students in beginning at 7:15 a.m. Rehearsal will begin at 7:30 a.m., sharp. Students arriving after 7:30 a.m. may need to wait for someone to let them in the front entrance. This is done in an effort to provide a quality rehearsal, free from interruptions, for those students who arrive on time. (All other regularly scheduled Friday 5th grade rehearsals will begin at 7:45 a.m.).
Combined 4th/5th rehearsal schedule:
● February 28 (7:30 a.m.)
● March 28 (7:30 a.m.)
● May 2 (7:30 a.m.)
Should you have any questions or concerns in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Warm regards -
Mr. Strange, ISD Band Director

PLEASE CONTINUE TO BRING BOX TOPS IN
|
Thank you all those who have been bringing in the Box Tops for Education coupons you have been collecting for our school. Every dime counts, so please bring them in, even if you just have a few.
There is a special collections box, in the shape of a schoolhouse, in the hallway opposite the Main Office.
Please place properly cut Box Tops in a sealed envelope or bag with your child's name and class written on it. The class that collects the most Box Tops by the end of this month will be in store for a special class celebration.

For the 2013-2014 school year, one of ISD's strategic improvement plan goals was to provide parents with positive communication about their child according to his or her academic or social-emotional learning experiences. This goal was created by the Safe School Climate Committee upon their review of the Safe School Climate Survey and the Harris Survey at the beginning of this school year.
In the near future a survey will be administered to the parent community regarding this goal. We will use the results from this survey to direct our planning and ongoing implementation of this goal. Please be on the lookout for it in the weeks to come.
Thank you,
Eugene Matejek, Assistant Principal

GHS JAZZ ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE MARCH 13
|

The Greenwich High School Jazz Ensemble, led by Mr. John Yoon, will be performing once again for our elementary students. This year's event will be held at the ISD Media Center on Thursday, March 13 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The event is FREE and open to all Greenwich elementary school students and their families. Mark your calendars!
In addition to performing, Mr. Yoon and the members of the jazz ensemble will take questions from students in the audience. This event is a great way for your child to experience, up close and personal, the musical opportunities available to them in just a few years here in Greenwich.
We hope to see you there!
Best,
M. Strange
