Dear ISD Parents,

I hope you are faring well with the extremely cold weather we are experiencing this week. Outdoor recess was cancelled on Wed., Thurs. and Fri. due to the very low temperatures. Although I consider myself an "outdoor recess" advocate, safety is always paramount when making decisions about going outside or not. Single digit temperatures and wind chill factors below zero present potentially dangerous situations for students to be outdoors. The district does not have a specific procedure for schools to follow when outdoor recess should be cancelled. In that case, common sense needs to prevail.

However, I have noticed many students coming to school without hats, winter jackets and gloves and there are many cold days when they will be going outside for recess and they will need these items. Please consider that when students are preparing for school in the mornings.

Our January reading campaign is in full swing and I am thrilled to report that our students are well on their way of reaching our school goal of reading at least 2014 during this start to the new calendar year. Please encourage the reading habit at home, and of course, always include non-fiction reading! If the goal is met, which I expect it will, we will celebrate with a dance party.

I cannot stress enough how important it is for our third, fourth and fifth graders to practice their typing skills at home. With the SBAC testing coming this spring, which will be administered entirely on the computer, strong typing skills will be an asset. We have addressed this issue here in school by adjusting our programs, but practice time at home will be very beneficial. Practice time, as short as ten to fifteen minutes if done on a regular basis, can produce significant results.

Our winter AFTERS session begins next week. If your child is enrolled in a class, please remind them prior to and the day of the class to be sure they attend. Individual classes are announced at the end of each day during dismissal procedures as a reminder. In fact, individual names for each class are also announced during the first two weeks of a session to remind them. Have a good week.

Sincerely,
Terry Ricci

FROM THE ART DEPARTMENT

Dear Parents:

We are  #1 in art uploaded and funds earned on artsonia.com. My thanks go to our ISD parent volunteers who assist in photographing, editing, and uploading all of these creative works. I have received many kind words from all who enjoy seeing the great works from their children, joining the fan clubs, and making special comments on the work.  The kids love it, too!

Please have your child bring in a smock to art. We love getting messy but Mom's don't.

Please donate old tennis balls to the art room.

Thank you,

Mrs. Verdier
