Dear ISD Parents,
As of this writing, we have thankfully emerged from a "polar vortex," which caused a few disruptions to our regular school schedule. During extremely cold weather, recess is cancelled so this week students did not have outdoor recess for two days. We all welcomed the rising temperatures and the ability to have students go outside.
The weather also impacted BioBus, a mobile science enrichment program, sponsored by the PTA. It is an actual bus transformed into a science center. Each class visited the bus to experience and participate in a variety of activities. One morning the cold weather prevented the door to the bus from being opened. Fortunately, with the aid of a hair dryer and extension cords, we were eventually able to open the door and continue with the program. The activities were engaging and generated a lot of excitement. Hopefully, you heard about them from your children. The instructors were very impressed with our students who asked many probing questions and comfortably shared their deep thinking about what they were witnessing.
BioBus is just one activity during ISD's "science month." Next week, there are two science nights, Jan. 13th and Jan. 16th. (The same program will be offered twice.) Parents and students are invited to observe and experience science presentations at different stations. Last year, we had a similar event and it was a huge success. Please register if interested in attending.
Later on in the month, CT Science will visit several grades with programs to support the STEM standards. Also, the district's science coach will be at ISD working with many teachers on supporting the science curriculum and sharing her expertise. As always, there is a lot happening at ISD.
Our postponed concert and art show were held this week and our students, with guidance from their teachers, showcased their artistic talents beautifully. Once again, it was a moment of pride for the staff, parents and me. Have a good week and stay warm.
Sincerely,
Terry Ricci

Registration will close tonight, Friday, January 10. It will re-open on Tuesday, January 14. At that time, you may only register for classes that have open spaces.
Don't miss out on the fun!
Conveniently, classes take place at ISD right after dismissal, from 3:20 to 4:20p.

SCIENCE MONTH
|
The BioBus Visited ISD!
This week all ISD students visited the BioBus, a solar-powered bus filled with research-grade microscope equipment for the children to investigate the world of the "Delphia." Students used their inquiry approach to learning as they interacted with the scientists on board. They also employed the Scientific Method and experienced what real scientists do.
This enrichment program was paid for and sponsored by ISD PTA. Thank you for your membership support.

MEDIA CENTER READING CHALLENGE 2014
|
In celebration of the New Year, ISD students are participating in our Annual Media Center Reading Challenge! The school goal is to read 2014 books in the month of January and if students reach or exceed that goal they will earn a school-wide Dance Party in the gym at the end of the challenge!
Children are bringing home special bookmarkers on which they record the title of each book they have read. As they complete each bookmarker, they return it to the basket in the Media Center or to their classroom teacher.
Students are allowed to record the titles of books at their own reading level (or within a close range of their level) or books above their own level that parents or older relatives read to them. They may not include books that are well below their reading level that they read to younger siblings or friends.
