Message from our Principal

Dear ISD Parents,

As you know we are in the throes of parent-teacher conferences where you will have the opportunity to sit down with your child's teacher(s) and hear how their learning is progressing.  You will also receive their report card.  Included in the envelope, some students (grades two through five) will have their DRP results report, along with a letter from me.  You may recall the students took the DRP standardized reading test earlier in the fall and will take it again in the spring.  Results in the fall tend to be lower as they may reflect reading inactivity during the summer.  I have scheduled a meeting on Friday, January 24th at 9:00 am in the cafe to help parents understand their own child's results, as well as to share overall school results.  In addition, students in grade three will also receive their results report for the Stanford Achievement Battery of Tests and Otis-Lennon School Ability Test they also took this fall.  I will be speaking to these results as well at the meeting.

On Tuesday, December 10th, we have another early dismissal day for parent/teacher conferences.  Although I attend many conferences because I am asked to be there, either by a parent or a teacher or because I just want to sit in, I have carved a pocket of time on Tuesday afternoon to hold open office hours between 2 and 4. If you need to ask me a question or share something with me, you may stop in without an appointment.  These meetings should be brief.  If an issue/topic requires more time, we can always schedule a separate appointment.

Instruction in the new math program is thriving.  There is a lot to absorb as the curriculum which is based on the Common Core Standards is organized in units.  Teachers are teaching the units of instruction in a workshop model and using, primarily, the Math in Focus Program to support the teaching.  There is a lot of newness to the math program in relation to content, organization, format and delivery.  Training will continue sporadically throughout the school year.  In fact, just this week, I attended a half day session on Think Central, which is a digital resource center for administrators and teachers to access.  In general, the consensus, at least by teachers and students, is that the math program this year is more challenging than what we have had in the past. That is good news.

Last night, Dr. McKersie proposed recommendations that would include changes to the current magnet school lottery process.  Please review the information on the  district's website.  The recommendations include potential changes to future lottery students. The Board will vote on the recommendations on Thursday, December 19th.  If you have any questions about the recommendations, please do not hesitate to contact me.

We are celebrating First Responders Day on Friday, December 13th.  The Eastern Network of schools (ISD, OG, Riverside, North Mianus) will recognize our local fire departments.  A parent link with more details will be forthcoming early next week.

The holiday concert is scheduled for Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm.  Dr. Heikel, Ms. Madonna and Mr. Strange have had the students working very hard in preparation for this annual event.  Also, our student's artwork will be on display as part of our Art Show. Hours are 1-4pm and 5-6pm.  Hope to see you all there.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci

PHILIPPINES RELIEF RUN/WALK

A big thank you to all the children and parents that supported the Philippine Relief Run/Walk.  With your help we were able to raise $280!  These funds will go to the Save the Children Typhoon Haiyan Children's Relief Fun.  It was lovely to all come together as a community for a good cause and get a bit of fun and a healthy snack in as well!  Thank you King's Market for donating a box of apples to this event.

ISD WINTER CONCERT

Tuesday, December 10th - 7pm

There will be two concerts, both to be held in the gym:

● The first, for students and teachers, will be held during school hours at 9:30am

● The evening concert, for family and friends, will be held at 7pm. Students who participate in both band and chorus should come to the gym at 6:15pm. After they warm up and tune, they will be dismissed to the music room to warm up with Dr. Heikel. Students who only participate in band should come to the gymnasium at 6:30pm

Students should plan on dressing up for the evening concert - white tops and black/dark bottoms

No sneakers or jeans, please!

The students in all the performing ensembles have been working very hard and are eagerly looking forward to the concert. We are very excited to present what promises to be an enjoyable night of music. In the meantime, please encourage your children to increase their practice time in this "home stretch" before our concert. Lastly, prior the concert, the ISD 3-5 Winter Art show will be on display in the main hallways of the school from 1-4pm & 5-6pm. Please come and visit before the concert!

Following the concert, we will break from Friday before-school rehearsals for several weeks. These rehearsals will resume on Friday, January 24 (drop off between 7:30-7:45am). Lessons will continue as scheduled each week in the meantime. Thank you.

Happy Holidays!
