Rehearsal

Dear ISD Parents,

Thank you to Alexis Voulgaris, Amy Mellendorf and their crew of volunteers who were very busy during our two-day book fair.  Both students and parents alike were pleased with the book selection, as evidenced by the level of excitement the book purchases generated.  Happy reading!

Looking ahead, we have conference days coming up which means students will be dismissed at 1:15.  The days are Thursday, December 5th (which is in the week we come back from Thanksgiving) and Tuesday, December 10th.  Evening conferences will also be held the evening of Thursday, December 12th.  If you have forgotten your conference date, please contact your child's teacher and request the date and time.  Please try to be on time as the conferences are scheduled back to back and when a conference starts late, it impacts the others that follow.  Also, if you need to cancel and reschedule, please do so as soon as possible.  These conferences are an opportunity for two-way information between home and school, which in turn, strengthens the learning process for your child.  In addition to receiving your child's report card, this is an opportunity to ask questions, whether it is about your own child's performance or curriculum-related.  If a teacher cannot give you the information at that time, they will get back to you at a later date.

The PTA has arranged for an author visit on Tuesday, December 3rd.  The author is Laurie Keller and students in kindergarten through grade three will have the opportunity to hear about her personal writing process and how it resulted in her books getting published.  These author visits emphasize the importance of good writing skills, as the students hear concrete examples of how the author managed the process of organizing their thoughts, putting words to paper, revising, editing, etc. Knowing that the writing results in "real books" is a "lightbulb" moment for students.  Thank you to the PTA for bringing these valuable experiences to our school.

I want to remind you about the opportunity to experience taking a version of the SBAC (new state mandated test) on Tuesday, Nov. 26th at 2:00pm.  We will be in the computer lab but you are welcome to bring your own laptop, if you choose to.

Lastly, I want to wish the entire ISD community a warm and happy Thanksgiving.  Take time to relish the goodness we experience in our lives.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci

PHILIPPINES RELIEF RUN

Philippines Relief Run ~ December 5 at 1:15pm
immediately following dismissal on the early release day

The ISD PTA Wellness Committee will hold a fundraising event to benefit those affected by the typhoon in the Philippines. A suggested donation of $5 will be collected from the children and given to Save the Children.

The children will be encouraged to run (or walk) around the ISD field after school. Parents are welcome to join, getting a little post Thanksgiving workout. A healthy snack will be served afterwards. We hope to see you there!

Volunteers can sign up here.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

This year, the Health and Wellness Committee are working as hard as ever to keep healthy eating and good health in the minds of the children as much as possible through their school year. In an effort to keep a regular dialogue up about this, we have decided to run a monthly Health and Wellness spot on the morning announcement over the school intercom. At the beginning of each month, a seasonal and interesting food related paragraph will be read out to the school after the other morning announcements, by the children. This month, to kick-off the new initiative, Winter Squash will be featured.

Winter Squash

Look out for the December health and wellness news in Dragon Tales, and invite your child to explore each of our topics in more detail - perhaps with tastings, research about the food together in the library or online, finding recipes to cook with it in, and looking in the supermarket for types of the food etc. The more we can all engage in talking about healthy food and keeping it fun, the more

likely we are to have an open mind about trying it!

For any Health and Wellness comments, concerns, or tips, please contact your PTA Co-Chairs for this year,

 Elisabeth Weindling & Teresa Fellows

All students are invited to perform.  Each Lunch Period can Showcase up to SIX Students!  Please join us in encouraging our children to participate and reminding them that ISD has talent!

ISD WINTER CONCERT

Tuesday, December 10th - 7pm

There will be two concerts, both to be held in the gym:

● The first, for students and teachers, will be held during school hours at 9:30am

● The evening concert, for family and friends, will be held at 7pm. Students who participate in both band and chorus should come to the gym at 6:15pm. After they warm up and tune, they will be dismissed to the music room to warm up with Dr. Heikel. Students who only participate in band should come to the gymnasium at 6:30pm

Students should plan on dressing up for the evening concert - white tops and black/dark bottoms

No sneakers or jeans, please!

The students in all the performing ensembles have been working very hard and are eagerly looking forward to the concert. We are very excited to present what promises to be an enjoyable night of music. In the meantime, please encourage your children to increase their practice time in this "home stretch" before our concert. Lastly, prior the concert, the ISD 3-5 Winter Art show will be on display in the main hallways of the school from 1-4pm & 5-6pm. Please come and visit before the concert!

Following the concert, we will break from Friday before-school rehearsals for several weeks. These rehearsals will resume on Friday, January 24 (drop off between 7:30-7:45am). Lessons will continue as scheduled each week in the meantime. Thank you.

Happy Holidays!
