First Marking Period Closes

Dear ISD Parents,

Based on the students still talking about it, Monster Mash was once again a huge success.  Thank you to the PTA, Margaret Mullen and her crew for putting together a fun celebration for everyone.

The pumpkin theme permeated many school activities this week, as expected.  Fifth grade students took the theme and integrated math, science, as well as entertainment,
all in one class activity that was thoroughly enjoyed by all.  There was also pumpkin decorating, estimating and counting seeds, pumpkin stories, etc.

The kindergartners immensely enjoyed the High Touch, High Tech presentations in their respective classrooms earlier this week.  The presentations centered around science concepts and topics and provided the students with hands-on exploration of those concepts.  The event reinforces our science curriculum in a fun and engaging manner, while making the concepts more concrete for the students.

This past Wednesday, Assistant Superintendent, Irene Parisi, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Coordinator for the district, Sheila Civale, spent the morning here at ISD for the purpose of observing the math program in action.  We spent time in grades one, three, four and five during their scheduled math blocks and were impressed with the teaching we observed, along with the high level of student engagement and active participation.

On Tuesday, November 5th, Election Day, there is no school for students but it is a full day of professional development for teachers.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci

ELECTION DAY!! TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5

Vote and make an impact!  This year we have the opportunity to vote for four people to the Board of Education ("BOE") and they will be instrumental in determining the direction our public schools take on many issues of vital importance to our children and our town. When voting, note that only the top two Democrats and top two Republicans will be elected to the BOE so casting three or four ballots for candidates of the same party is effectively nullifying one or two of your votes.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We have two exciting PTA events this month. To make these events successful, we need your help.  It has never been easier to sign up, just use the links below.

CHAMPS (Children Against Land Mines Program)

 Wednesday, November 6th

The 5th grade will learn about the global issue of land mines and how they can be a part of the solution to this devastating problem, a very IB concept!

Traveling Art Program - Docents Needed

This town-wide program and its volunteer docents present portfolios of well-known art reproductions to the students. The K-5 program encourages the children to think deeper thoughts, verbalize what they see, and share how they feel about the art. The program is looking for more volunteer docents who will be trained and present during the school year at different elementary schools. Although helpful, no prior art or teaching background is necessary. The schedule is flexible. Please contact the program facilitator, Patrice Anibal: pdanibal@gmail.com
