Dear ISD Parents,

Thank you to the PTA for sponsoring the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Mobile Lab this week.  Stations were set up  around the gymnasium for students to visit which focused on one or more STEM strands.  The students were intrigued and very excited about their experiences.  The concepts that came alive for the students were some of the same ones included in our curricula so the hands on opportunities and explorations were reinforcing.  There was also exposure to new concepts that fostered a lot of interest and motivation to learn even more.  Thank you to the many parent volunteers who manned the stations and to Suzanne Aysseh who coordinated the visit and schedule.

This week's early release day provided a menu of choices for teachers in our Eastern network (OG, Riverside, NM and ISD) to choose from in expanding their professional learning.  The choices included math performance based tasks and assessments, differentiated levels of Smartboard use, among others.  One option which many teachers chose to do was to learn more about the SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) test.  Students in grades three through five will be taking this test, which reflects the Common Core Standards, in the spring as it replaces the CMT (except for gr. 5 science).  Learning more about this test, which will be taken entirely on a computer, included taking actual tests in reading and math.  This was an eye-opening experience as the tests are very different from anything students have taken in the past.  The questions not only require multiple steps in solving math problems, for example, but the language arts tests may include reading several passages and viewing a video to answer a series of questions where comparisons are required.  The purpose of offering this opportunity to teachers is to obviously familiarize them with what students will be expected to demonstrate and complete so we can begin to prepare them for what is expected.  We have already put some steps into place for preparing students to take the test on computers by having students improve their typing skills starting now as early as grade one knowing strong typing skills will be needed. In the meantime, we are beefing up typing for all students who will be taking the test in the spring of 2014.  I will be sharing more information about both, the Common Core Standards and the SBAC throughout the year as they represent a significant shift in both teaching and assessing our students' learning.

Please continue to refer to the calendar for early release days and other events either on the GPS website, ISD DragonTales, etc.  Wednesday's early release day resulted in many students not getting picked up at the 1:15 dismissal, which resulted in the office staff, several staff members and me having to make many phone calls to parents.  In some cases, it was difficult to reach a live person.  We will also try to increase reminders on our end as well.  Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci

NEWS FROM THE NURSE'S OFFICE

Food allergies:

Again, I am requesting that parents not bring in the Lindy brand Italian Ice to school for birthday celebrations. This brand of Ice was reported to be "not nut safe" because the equipment used to make their Ice is shared in making their nuts/peanuts food products. This can present a life threatening allergic reaction in a child who has a severe allergy to nuts/peanuts. We have a number of students here at ISD that can have this type of severe allergic reaction if such products are eaten. We want all students to safely participate in the celebration of a peer's birthday in class and no child should be excluded. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

State of CT mandated school health screenings:

I will begin back screening for scoliosis on 5th grade students starting next week. Letters have been given to the 5th graders to take home to their parents regarding the screening. A video will be shown in class and I will go to the class to answer any questions the students may have and explain the screening process. It is all observation; students are not touched and privacy is maintained!

3rd Grade Physical Exams:

Parents who have not already handed in their child's physical exam form are encouraged to continue to do this as soon as physical exams are competed. This is a requirement in the Greenwich Public Schools system. Please remember to make copies for yourselves for any future needs.

ELECTION DAY!! TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5

Vote and make an impact!  This year we have the opportunity to vote for four people to the Board of Education ("BOE") and they will be instrumental in determining the direction our public schools take on many issues of vital importance to our children and our Town. When voting, note that only the top two Democrats and top two Republicans will be elected to the BOE so casting three or four ballots for candidates of the same party is effectively nullifying one or two of your votes.

The deadline for voter registration is October 29th at 8pm. Register in person at the Registrars of Voters Office, Town Hall, 101 Field Point Rd., Greenwich, CT.  Direct any questions to: (203) 622-7889.

3rd GRADE BALLET

Congratulations 3rd Graders!

Last week, the 3rd grade culminated their Meaningful Movements unit by putting on a wonderful performance for the school and their families.

Thank you to Mrs. Marchetti and Mrs. Loveless for co-chairing this partnership, the many parent volunteers that worked with the children over the past month and to all the teachers that helped the children bring their stories to life.

STEM MUSEUM AT ISD

Stem Museum at ISD

As part of the PTA's commitment to bring more science and technology focused enrichment to our students, the ISD gym was transformed into a state-of-the-art hands-on children's museum focused on STEM education on Monday, October 21st.  STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators. The students had a wonderful time exploring 10 different exhibits.

Thank you to our parent volunteers for helping make the day a huge success.
