Dear ISD Families,

I want to remind you the proper protocol for distributing party invitations as some issues have come up.  If a student is celebrating a birthday with a party that includes all the students in his/her class, then invitations could be distributed in school.  However, if the party includes selected students or a partial group of the class, then invitations should be distributed in an alternate method, i.e. postal mail, e-mail, etc.  Although birthday celebrations are monumental milestones in a child's life, we do not want to incur feelings of exclusion for those not participating.  Thank you for your support in this matter.

Occasionally, we are made aware of academic contests that are endorsed by school personnel.  These contests can be motivating to students and spur deeper interest in a subject matter.  Please see below for details regarding a math contest being held for students in Fairfield County students.

Sumdog

The contest is free to take part in and all students will receive a fun participation reward!  Students compete by playing Sumdog's free online math games anytime between

8am Friday, October 25th and Thursday, October 31 at 8 pm.

It will only take an hour or so to get a competitive score.

In order to join in the fun, visit:

http://www.sumdog.com/en/Contest_invitation/?hc

If you have any questions or need help getting set up, you can email jeremy@sumdog.com or call 877-978-6364.

Lastly, I am the first to say that test scores are not and should not be the only measure in assessing a school's performance, especially for an IB school.  The reality is, however, that test scores are high stakes. With that in mind, I am very proud to report that ISD was ranked number four among hundreds of elementary schools in CT, as listed by School Digger.com.  In fact, we were the highest-ranking elementary school out of the eleven Greenwich elementary schools.  I am very proud of this accomplishment, by both our students and of course, our teachers, who are a dedicated and hard-working group of people.  (Pardon the bragging but this is a significant point of pride, which I wanted to share.)

Exciting learning continues to go on at ISD.  Please see the letter by Mrs. Madoff, Media Specialist, in this issue regarding happenings in the Media Center.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci

PTA ENRICHMENT

Enrichment is the act of improving something by adding value - and that is exactly the PTA Enrichment Committee's goal when selecting and organizing activities that will broaden our children's learning environment at ISD.  The PTA Enrichment committees include Classical Café, Traveling Art and Cultural Partnerships at each grade level as well as some special events such as 'Math Night' and 'Science Nights'.

STEM Mobile Museum is the next enrichment event on Monday, October 21.  All classes will visit the museum, which is made up of 15 hands-on exhibits.  January will be Science Month at ISD.  This will include several activities designed to enrich classroom lessons, broaden our children's thinking and bring STEM topics to life in an exciting way.  Look for more details to come about 'Science Nights' in January.

Additional Enrichment events include author visits, both Sarah Weeks and Laurie Keeler are already scheduled, a weeklong visit from Writing Consultant Donato D'Albis (Mr. D), puppet shows in the lower grades and additional exciting and enriching events on the horizon.  All of these Enrichment activities are made possible through PTA funding and ISD parent volunteers.

NEWS FROM THE ART ROOM

Dear First Grade Parents,

A recent First Grade study featured the works of one of my favorite artists, Marc Chagall. After showing the works of several Chagall studies, my students were quite inspired to create their own.

"My Marc Chagall Window" is now up on artsonia.com which I encourage you to view.  The children created personal stories surrounding a self-portrait in Sharpie marker and then painted with watercolors.

A little know gem, The Union Church in Pocantico   Hills, NY, is approximately 40 minutes away,  and features nine incredible Marc Chagall stained glass windows, as well as the Rose Window by Henri Matisse, commissioned by the Rockefeller family.  It is open to the public on most days, and visiting hours and directions are posted on the church website. Please go to both websites for more information and photos of the works.  When you go, definitely ask for an explanation of the history of each of the ten windows. Each piece is intricately designed with a different subject and story. No photography is allowed.

Creatively Yours,

Melissa Verdier, Art Teacher

PLAYGROUND IMPROVEMENTS

What is special about this table?

A new picnic table has arrived at ISD.  Thank you to Suzanne Aysseh for coordinating, Rick Kriskey for delivering and Nestle Waters for donating this table to our school. What's really cool is it is made of 1,200 post-consumer plastic bottles.
It was made as part of "Project Picnic".  Similar tables can be found all over the Stamford area.

FLUORIDE RINSE

There will be a fluoride rinse volunteer meeting on Wednesday, October 23rd at 8:30 A.M. in the cafeteria.  It will last approximately 15 minutes.

We are still looking for Parent Volunteers to help with the fluoride rinse program.  If you are interested in helping, please come to the meeting or contact the school Dental Hygienist, Jeannie Schnakenberg @ 622-3779. Only a small amount of time on Wednesday mornings is necessary to help with the program.

If you cannot attend, please call Jeannie Schnakenberg, RDH, @ 622-3779.  Thank you.

_________________________________________________

The fluoride rinse program will begin on Wednesday, October 30th.  Those students participating should report to the cafeteria at 8:30-8:45 every WEDNESDAY morning to do their rinse.  Don't Forget...

NO EATING OR DRINKING FOR 30 MINUTES AFTER SWISHING

Happy Swishing!!
