Dear ISD Families,

I want to thank everyone involved with last weekend's Fun Run and Tag Sale; it was a huge success on so many levels.  The best part for me was watching the students (and parents) tackle the obstacle course and the challenging run.  Determination and perseverance (my word for this school year) were in abundance!

As we settled into October, it has been a busy and productive week.  Our School Data Team met for the first time in this new school year.  The team, comprised of teachers from every grade level, special ed, ALP, and literacy, joined Mrs. Stoga, School Psychologist, Mr. Matejek and I spent a full morning discussing many important topics including the new math program, literacy plans for the year, etc. However, the bulk of the discussion centered around the formation of the school improvement plan's academic goal.  As you know in the past few years, our academic goal has focused on strengthening reading instruction as teachers learned new teaching practices and applied them in their instruction.  Although that work in reading will continue during this school year, the team decided to shift our main academic focus to math. Launching a new academic program is a significant initiative, as it requires new learning for the teachers in how they plan and deliver their instruction.  By establishing our goal on learning the new math program, it will enable us to have a sharper focus on this program's implementation.

The Safe Schools Climate committee also met this week under the direction of Mr. Matejek, our Assistant Principal.  The committee drafted a school improvement goal that centered around positive communication from school to home.  This area was chosen after data was analyzed from the Safe Schools Climate Survey administered last spring as well as the Harris Survey, which was administered in the spring of 2012.  Our plan is to have these School Improvement Plan goals completed by the end of the month.

October is designated as Anti-Bullying Month.  The teachers and I are in the midst of planning school-related activities to address this important topic.  In fact, I have scheduled a presentation to be given at our next faculty meeting on the many issues related to student behavior and bullying.  The approach to tackling this serious issue needs to be a two-prong plan between home and school.  This week there was an informative article in the Greenwich Time on how parents can support and reinforce appropriate social behavior.  Here is the link if you want to read it.  Look for more information regarding this subject in future DT issues.

I would like to remind all parents who pick up their children in the afternoon not to double park on Florence Road.  It causes a hazardous condition, not to speak of the bottleneck traffic.  If possible, it is best to arrive a few minutes later to stagger the number of cars trying to enter the circle.  The buses usually leave by 3:20 and they have to leave first before cars can enter the driveway.  At times, a bus cannot make a left hand turn out of the driveway, which causes the bottleneck.  Please be mindful of this and plan pick-up accordingly.  Have a good week.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci

FUN RUN & TAG SALE

Thank You Sponsors and Participants for Making

the 3rd Annual Tag Sale / Fun Run a Success!

Last Saturday the ISD PTA held its 3rd Tag Sale / Fun Run and what a fabulous day it was!  Thank you to the Co-Chairs of the event, MJ Desnoyers and Gisella Brambilla (Tag Sale), Cathy Steel, Louise McKenna and Karen Grant (Fun Run) and Kysa Englund and Elizabeth Janis (Bake Sale) for all their hard work and dedication in planning the day. Thank you as well to Daisy Herrera for organizing the high school volunteers and Mr. Boland for once again, planning the obstacle course for the run.

Thank you as well to all the volunteers who spent their time preparing and running the event.  Without your effort the event would not have happened.  Finally, thank you to the ISD community for clearing out your closets and donating to the Tag Sale.  In total, over $11,000 was raised which the PTA will use to support Enrichment programs at ISD.

Race day raffles included $5 gift certificates to Longford's Ice Cream and $20 gift certificates to Fleet Feet Sports Stamford.  Congratulations to Tristian B. who won the grand prize, Nike Air Pegasus sneakers, donated by Fleet Feet Sports Stamford.  Thanks to all 17 of our 2014 Fun Run sponsors!  Please support these companies who so generously supported our event.

The remaining items were donated to various charities including 25 bags of clothes to support Hamilton Ave School PTA's clothing drive, boxes of books to North Greenwich Preschool and Darien Book Aid Plan and other items were donated to Goodwill Stamford and Veterans of America.  Here is a copy of the Donation Form if you need to keep one for your records.

NEWS FROM THE ART ROOM

Dear Parents:

We are still in need of art editors for our school art website,

2nd Grade Mexican Painting Style with Tree Motif
Artist: Chris K

artsonia.com, for grades 1,2,3, and 5.  If you can offer 1 hour every other week for photo editing, it would be greatly appreciated!  It is surprisingly easy done with Flash.  Our students look forward to seeing their works in the artsonia museum. ISD PTA earns 30% from gift items purchased from the site.

Please contact me if you can help.

NEWS FROM THE NURSE

Food Allergies: The Otis Spunkmeyer Cookies sold in the cafeteria have been found to be manufactured in a facility that also processes products that contain peanuts/tree nuts, milk, wheat, soy, eggs...on the same equipment. These cookies will not be sold to students with severe allergies to these foods.

3rd Grade Physical Exams:  Parents are encouraged to continue to hand in the blue physical exam forms as soon as physical exams are completed.  This is a requirement in the Greenwich Public Schools system.

Lice: Parents are strongly encouraged to continue to check their children's heads for the presence of nits/lice during the regular home routine. Being diligent in doing this has decreased the spread of this condition here at ISD.

Flu season: It's here!  Parents are urged to speak to their children's doctor re: their recommendations as whether or not their child should get the flu vaccination. As an FYI- the Greenwich Department of Health gives vaccinations to Greenwich residents free of charge.

No appointment necessary: any Monday, Wednesday, or Friday: 2:30-3:30pm. Tel: (203) 622-7854

Illness protocol: Parents are urged to familiarize themselves with the Greenwich Public Schools "Guidelines for Childhood Illnesses". The school needs to be notified if a child is being kept home and the reason. Please leave a message with the school's attendance line or the school secretary (confidentiality is maintained) or you may speak to me directly by calling or leaving a message at (203) 698-6056.

Please state the reason for your child's absence, symptoms and if a fever is present (number in degrees of the fever). Parents are urged to purchase a thermometer in order to confirm the presence of fever. Reporting illnesses and symptoms will help me keep track of illnesses in the school. Parents are not to send their children to school if ill or have symptoms of illness. You can call me to discuss the symptoms if in doubt.
