Dear ISD Families,

The identification process for the Grade 2 ALP Enrichment program changed this year. In the past, first graders were screened and tested in the spring of first grade and identified for participation in this program.  This year, the process has changed.  Mrs. Feinberg, the grade 2 ALP teacher, will begin to provide lessons in each of the grade 2 classrooms beginning October 1st.  For these lessons, she will deliver instruction in both reading and math to small groups of students on a rotating basis. All students will participate in this beginning stage of the process.  This will allow Mrs. Feinberg to become familiar with all the students, which will allow her to provide personal input during the next stages of the identification process.  The next stages will begin in November.  Mrs. O'Regan, the ALP Coordinator for the district has scheduled three town meetings to explain this process.  Please look for details regarding dates and times of these meetings in this issue of DT.

The laptops the PTA purchased during the summer are up and running and being utilized by our students for a variety of instructional tasks and purposes. The teachers are excited by this generous addition to our supply of available resources for supporting our academic programs.  On behalf of them, I thank you again for your support and generosity.

Tuesday is October 1st, which is the deadline for the residency verification process. As of this writing, ISD has about 5 families who have not verified their residency. Although there will be a short grace period, I would urge those families to complete the process as soon as possible.  We do not want any interruptions to your child's learning process. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

We will have a lockdown drill next week in keeping with our safety procedures.  The teachers are preparing the students for what occurs during a drill so they know what to expect.  However, I am asking parents to consider having a conversation with their children as well, to ease any possible anxieties.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci

BAND NEWS

During the course of our first few band lessons together, I ask all students to regularly watch (at home) the
Tradition of Excellence DVD that is included in the back cover of their method book. This is an excellent resource, particularly in the first several weeks of instruction. This DVD contains important lessons including instrument assembly, correct finger placement, tone production and posture. When possible, I would ask that you watch these lessons along side your children, as it will help to reinforce the material.

Additionally, the CD/DVD has recorded accompaniments that correspond to the exercises in the books. Students can play along with these fun accompaniments, using a computer or CD player that supports MP3 formats.

Happy practicing!

NEWS FROM THE ART ROOM

Artsonia is up and running with over 200 works on view.   However, we are in need of Artsonia editors for Grades 2, 3, and 5.  Editing can be done at home or from school.  Photos are taken by my volunteer photographers and placed on my iPhoto.  You would be asked to volunteer approximately 1.5 hours every other week to edit (straighten, crop, and export each work onto the Artsonia site).  Training takes approximately 15 minutes.

Please email me for further information, as your help is greatly appreciated by our students, parents and PTA.  Many gift items imprinted with your child's art are available on this site and 30% goes to our ISD PTA.

Please visit the site, join the fan clubs, and have fun making lots of comments on your child's art.

Regards,

Melissa Verdier, Art Teacher
