Dear ISD Families,

Thank you for attending our Open House presentation this week.  The teachers and I hope you found it informative.  We had a great turnout and it was a pleasure to see so many of you.

Please note that there will be a Parent Presentation on our new Math program on Wed., 9/25, at 7 pm at Old Greenwich School.  Mrs. Irene Parisi, Director of Curriculum, and several of the district's math coaches will present the information to our network parent community (OGS, ISD, North Mianus and Riverside Schools).  I hope you will be able to attend.

Next Wed., 9/18, is an Early Release Day.  Students will be dismissed at 1:15 so teachers can attend professional development workshops.  Most teachers (classroom, special education, ALP) will be continuing their training in using the new Math program while Essentialists (music, p.e., etc.) will attend workshops related to their discipline.

The ISD Handbook, which has information about both the district and our school, is now on our school's website. Hard copies are available in the office.  A form went home today asking you to review the information.  Please sign it and return it to school.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci

MEDIA CENTER NEWS

I welcome you and your children back to our Media Center this year!  Please make note of the following information:

*Media is an important class for the K-5 students each week.  During each 45-minute class, students learn about research strategies, technology, communication, digital citizenship, and literature.

*In addition to this 45-minute class, each week students visit the computer lab for typing practice and technology lessons. Each of these classes last 30 minutes.  Teachers may sign up for additional lab time for research and projects that involve technology.

*Students in grades 1-5 are allowed to check out up to 4 books. The checkout period is 3 weeks with an option to renew one time.

*Kindergarten students begin the year by checking out 2 books per week.  We are teaching them to take responsibility for their own books, and we ask that they return their 2 books each week.  Beginning in January, they are allowed to check out 3 books each week.

*Kindergarten and first grade students receive Media bags in which they carry their books to and from school each week.  They should have a doorknob or hook at home on which they hang their bag so that they can pull and return books as they read them.

*For additional typing practice, click on the BBC Typing Link under "IB Virtual Resources" on our ISD home page.

I hope to meet many of you this year - please stop by the Media Center anytime to say hello to our Media Assistant, Mrs. Robbins, our Media Technical Assistant, Mr. Harris, or myself!

Thank you! Mrs. Madoff

NEWS FROM THE ART ROOM

Dear Parents:

I hope to continue working with artsonia.com, the ISD school art museum website.  However, we need volunteers to edit and upload our ISD artist works into the museum this year.  Please email me if you can help approximately 1 1/2 or 2 hours per week with the editing or photography. Editing can be done at home after you receive 20 minutes of training with me. It is helpful to have 1 volunteer per grade level.

Please donate used tennis balls to the art room.

Thanks!

Melissa Verdier, art teacher

NEWS FROM THE NURSE

Re: Food Allergies: A parent of a child with severe allergies to nut products informed me that the Lindy's Brand Italian Ice are "not nut safe" due to the equipment used to make their Ice is shared in making their nuts/peanuts food products.  I am requesting that parents not provide this brand of Ice for celebrations in school.

Re: Lice: Parents are urged to continue to check their children as part of the daily home routine. Due to everyone's cooperation, the cases of lice are not as prevalent as in other schools.  Please communicate to me if you have treated your child for lice/nits.

Re: State of Ct. mandated school health screenings: I will begin screening 1st, 2nd, 4th,and 5th grade students for vision, hearing, and/or scoliosis in the beginning of October. Children who wear glasses should be reminded to bring their glasses to school.
