Message from our Principal

Dear ISD Parents,

This is our last issue of the `12-`13 school year and I want to start off by wishing all of you a great summer to have fun and do a little relaxing. By all accounts, we have had a very successful year as we look back at our accomplishments, the learning that has occurred and all the special events.

In reading all the report cards, the teachers have given suggestions to you and your children for keeping their skills up over the summer. They include writing in journals, reading both non-fiction and fiction books, using IXL and other software, etc. Speaking of reading, Mrs. Caminiti, our Literacy Specialist, and Mrs. Madoff, our Media Specialist, have created our summer reading program for your children to participate in. It has been explained to all students and the written information went home yesterday. The details are also on our school's website. Please help support your children in helping to maintain the good results (like the gr. 2 DRP results) they have achieved this year.

At last night's Board meeting, several options to address facility utilization and racial imbalance were removed from the table as they closed in on a sense of direction. Although a final decision will not be reached until October, the full scale redistricting, grade reorganization schools (K-2, 3-5) and open choice magnet for all schools were removed among other options, including those proposed by the community. Partial magnet schools with voluntary movement to less occupied schools remained as an option. Residency verification for all students in gr. 3, 4 and 5 was voted on last night and will affect many of you. Please look for details on the GPS website regarding the process, which will be done at the Board of Education building. This was voted on to validate those students who attend Greenwich schools actually live in town.

On behalf of the staff, we thank you for giving us the opportunity to have your children for a special year in their life. We look forward to their return in August. We also wish our fifth grade students and their families the best of luck as they move on to middle school.

All the best,

Terry Ricci

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE

As the end of this school year winds down I am sending out some reminders:

  • 3rd Grade Physical Exam Forms: Physical exam forms must be submitted before the start of 4th grade. Parents are reminded to copy the forms before handing them in.
  • 2nd Grade Physical Exam Forms: Physical exams for students entering 3rd grade are required. Please get the blue forms completed as soon as your child has his/her yearly physical exam any time after January 1, 2013. Please make a copy for your own personal record before submitting the physical to me.
  • Continue Checking for Lice/Nits: Parents are encouraged to continue to take a proactive approach to this matter by checking children at home and if away on vacation as part of the regular home routine. This proactive approach has prevented this issue from becoming as prevalent as it has been in other schools.

Thank you for all of your support/cooperation throughout the school year. Your children have all been a joy to take care of. I hope everyone has a healthy, enjoyable and safe summer. See you all in August 2013!

HELP ISD WITH BOX TOPS

As the volunteer coordinators for Box Tops for Education, we would like to thank you for your help during the 2012-2013 school year.

In September, the school house collection box will once again be located in the corridor outside of the Main Office. Please put appropriately trimmed box tops in plastic baggies or envelopes (in groups of 50, when possible). Please make sure that your child's name and class are clearly labeled.

You can continue to make a difference for our school all summer. One of the easiest ways is to sign up at the Box Tops website. It's easy, free and you'll learn about new ways to help our school reach our goal.

Exclusive online benefits:
  • Track our school's Box Tops earnings.
  • Print coupons for your favorite Box Tops brands.
  • Enter to win Bonus Box Tops for our school.
  • Make mealtime easier with family-pleasing recipes.

Box Tops offers three easy ways to earn cash for our school through everyday purchases -- all at no additional cost to you:

1. Clip Box Tops from your favorite brands - Clip Box Tops from hundreds of your family's favorite products from General Mills, Betty Crocker®, Pillsbury®, Ziploc®, Kleenex® and more. Box Tops are worth 10¢ each when our school redeems them. Check your pantry and start clipping!

2. Shop online and earn for our school - Box Tops has partnered with over 60 of the most popular online stores. Our school earns cash from every qualifying purchase.

3. Help our school with every charge - Earn 1% cash back for our school on every purchase. ISD earns the extra cash it needs and you get a 0% introductory APR with no annual fee.

Watch our school's progress online throughout the year. Check boxtops4education.com often for the latest news and information about the Box Tops program. Thank you for choosing to make a difference for our school with Box Tops!

Sincerely,

SUMMER SKILLS REVIEW BOOKS

You may order Summer Skills Review Books for math, language arts, keyboarding, Spanish, and French language skills. These are by no means required: however, you might wish to use them to maintain your child's skill in these areas over the summer. Since they are review material, you will want to order the book for the grade level your child is leaving. If you have questions about the appropriate level please ask your child's classroom teacher. Sample copies of the books as well as order forms are available in the office; order form is also below. Contact Emma Eschricht with questions.

NEWS FROM THE MEDIA CENTER

This summer your children have access to all kinds of great digital resources through the IB Virtual Resources page of our school website.

For answering their many questions about the world around them, they can go to Brainpop and Brainpopjr, National Geographic Kids, Pebblego, KidsInfoBits, and the entire Greenwich Public Schools Virtual Library.

To find e-books and watch related video (both fiction and non-fiction), they can check out Tumblebooks, Trueflix, Bookflix, Razkids, as well as the many downloadable e-book options in our own Destiny Library catalog.

For practicing math facts, students can access IXL from home all summer. And finally if they would like to improve their typing, a letter will be going home in each report card with login information for Type to Learn. End-of-Year Grade Level Typing goals are 15 WPM for 2nd grade, 20 for 3rd, 25 for 4th and 30 for 5th.

While all of these great online resources are available, we hope most students will spend lots of time enjoying the great outdoors this summer!

LAST CHANCE FOR
LOST & FOUND!
Please check the lost and found for your child's things. All items not picked up by Friday, June 21 will be donated to Neighbor to Neighbor. Thank you.
