Message from our Principal
Dear ISD Parents,
The onset of summer (although it feels like it is already here) usually brings a more carefree lifestyle with fewer time commitments, but there is a series of meetings that I would encourage you to either attend or be kept informed of. The school district is tackling the topics of Racial Imbalance and Facility Utilization and hopes to make a decision about them in the fall. In the meantime, meetings have begun and will continue that will focus on a slate of options to address these issues. These options and ultimately, a decision (to be made in the fall) will impact all schools and may impact your children. It is vital that parents participate in this process. Refer to this issue or the GPS website for details regarding meeting dates and locations.
Both Mrs. Finnegan and I are in the throes of meeting individually with each teacher for their end of year conference. This is just one requirement of the teacher evaluation process where they share their accomplishments of the year, along with the progress they have achieved on their two goals, one being a personal professional goal, and the second one aligned with one of the school's improvement goals. Suffice it to say, our teaching staff not only works hard at planning and delivering lessons from the district's curriculum for our students everyday, attend to individual learning needs, but also expands their own learning by adding to their professional skill set. This is a significant commitment in terms of time and effort but rewarding, as it benefits not only all of the students, but the school as well.
One of the many highlights and events held this week had to be the kindergarten performance. Our kindergartners showcased their learning from one of their science-based IB units, entitled Living vs. Non-Living, through poetry, song and dance. It was impressive to see how much material they had to memorize and perform before a very large "picture-taking" audience. It would be daunting for anyone, let alone, our six year olds. Congratulations to all their teachers for preparing them so well.
In closing, I want to extend an invitation to the entire ISD community to attend our gr. 5 Exhibition which will be held this coming week on Wednesday (6/5) and Thursday (6/6) from 9:30 to 2:30 with a lunch break in between. Our fifth graders, under the guidance of their teachers and mentors, have been working through the various stages of this process in small groups and are ready to demonstrate what they have learned. The IB program requires our fifth graders to participate in this process at the end of their elementary school experience by integrating the academic (reading, writing, speaking, research, etc.) skills they have acquired throughout the years. Based on what I have witnessed throughout this process, the presentations promise to be enlightening to all who attend. If you are available and can observe even a few of the groups, I assure you it will be worthwhile. Have a good week. See you at the beach party.
Sincerely,
Terry Ricci

For the First Grade Book Drive, please check your shelves and donate books for children of all ages through June 5. We also need a small amount of adult books.

Electronic waste is poisoning our air and water supplies. Please drop
off your used and unwanted electronics, and Lilly H. for her 5th grade exhibition project will take them to be recycled.
Items can include: cell phones, computers, printers, laptops, cords, and keyboards. Let's clean up the environment together! There will be a collection bin in the main hallway across from the office through June 7. Thanks for your help.

Although ISD does not have concerns with either of these issues, this is a District-wide issue that may impact all elementary schools.
The Board of Education will be getting its first presentation of options related to addressing school utilization and racial balance on Thursday, June 6 at 7pm at North Street School. There will be an opportunity for public comment at this meeting.
If you cannot attend but would like to see the presentation, the materials will be available sometime on June 6 here.
A video of the meeting will also be available on June 7 here.
Two public forums are scheduled to discuss the options:
Tuesday, June 11, 7:30pm at Western Middle School
