Message from our Principal
Dear ISD Parents,
Field Day is rescheduled for next Friday, May 31st. Let's hope the sun will be shining so we can proceed with this day which the students look forward to all year.
Besides announcing it at school prior to dismissal that Field Day was postponed, a Parent Link email was sent to the parent community. Unfortunately, some of them bounced back because the email addresses were no longer valid. It signaled to me to remind all of you that when contact information changes, it is really important for you to contact the school office. This includes if you moved to a new address, a change in cell phone, etc. Thank you.
This week the PTA sponsored Animal Embassy as our Book Fair evening event. The students and parents not only got to hear about different animals, but in some cases, touched and held them as well. This activity supports best practices in science education by having students explore the natural world in a hands on manner, while engaging them through questioning and thinking.
Those are just some of the same techniques teachers use when delivering science instruction. Much of our science instruction occurs through IB units. Of the six IB units teachers deliver each year, there are two or three in each grade level that are science based but integrated with other subject areas. When teachers write IB units, they write them using the Greenwich Public School curriculum standards and content. For those parts of the curriculum that do not get included in IB units, they are taught as stand alone units. If you have questions about how science instruction gets delivered, please contact your child's teacher.
In closing, I want to remind everyone that school ends on Monday, June 24th, making for a substantial amount of time for instruction and learning to occur. Although tempted by thoughts of summer, we will proceed with "business as usual," which means following our regular routines. I am not certain if the cause is due to these same thoughts, but there has been a tremendous spike of students arriving late to school. This translates into lost instructional time, which when cumulative, impacts achievement. Let's work together to sustain educational momentum for the remainder of the year.
Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. Please take a little time to reflect on the significance of the day and if appropriate, share its meaning with your children.
Sincerely,
Terry Ricci

FIELD DAY 2013: Friday, May 31
|
|
Get your red, white and blue ISD Spirit Wear
ready as Field Day is approaching fast! The
day promises to be full of fun, more time for
physical activity, sportsmanship and good cheer.
| |
This year grade levels will display ISD spirit by having classes choose
red, white or blue T-shirts to wear as their team color. Also, each class will be performing cheers from the sidelines while their classmates, as well as members of other grade levels, are competing throughout the day. The enthusiasm, variety and spirit of these cheers will be a strong factor in determining which class earns the coveted Sportsmanship Award,
the highest achievement of the day.
|
|
Bring your reusable water bottles! Water
stations will be available for constant refills.
Hope to see you there!
Mr. Boland & Mr. Bragdon

BAND NEWS FOR 3RD GRADE PARENTS
|

Recently, I met with all 3rd grade students to discuss the ISD band program, and to demonstrate the various band instruments. Every student received a band sign-up form (please email me if you did not receive one).
If your child is interested in participating in the band program in 4th grade, please carefully review the form with them, and return it by May 31. Please be sure to list three instrument choices.
Thank you!!

DROP OFF YOUR ELECTRONIC WASTE!
|
Electronic waste is poisoning our air and water supplies. Please drop off your used and unwanted electronics, and Lilly H. for her 5th grade exhibition project will take them to be recycled. Items can include: cell phones, computers, printers, laptops, cords, and keyboards. Let's clean up the environment together! There will be a collection bin in the main hallway across from the office through June 7.
Thanks for your help.
