Message from our Principal

Dear ISD Parents,

Field Day is scheduled for next Friday, May 24th. There are more details in this issue about this day, which students look forward to all year. The rain date is scheduled for Friday, May 31st.
A Parent Link message through email will go out on the 24th only IF the decision is made to postpone it. If not, I hope to see you in the front circle for the opening ceremony at 9:00 next Friday.

Although the weather doesn't yet reflect it, summer is fast approaching. If you received a letter from the Board of Education suggesting your child attend summer school and you have not registered for the program, please consider doing so.  "Invitations" were computer generated based on benchmark data. There are two locations this summer, Cos Cob School and Hamilton Avenue School. Summer school runs for six weeks with two three-week sessions. You may register for one or both. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher or Mrs. Finnegan.

The Book Fair is scheduled for next week. It is a good time to stock up on books to read over the summer. Please look for details in this issue.

This past Wednesday, teachers used the released time in the afternoon to be introduced to the first math unit that will launch our new program in the fall. The launching unit will run through the first two weeks of school, when students will be introduced to math vocabulary and the math workshop instructional framework. The core math program that will support the math units is Math in Focus, which aligns closely with the Common Core Standards. Teachers will soon be receiving Math in Focus materials to begin to familiarize themselves with over the summer. Formal training in using these materials is scheduled for the days after school has ended in June.

Lastly, the district has been working on the issue of racial imbalance, in conjunction with state officials, along with projected enrollment and facility utilization. At the next Board of Education meeting on Thursday, May 23rd, the Board will hear an analysis of conditions related to these topics, as prepared by central office staff and an independent consulting firm. The meeting will be held at Central Middle School beginning at 7pm. Have a good week.

Sincerely,

Terry Ricci

FIELD DAY 2013: Friday, May 24
Get your redwhite and blue ISD Spirit Wear
ready as Field Day is approaching fast! The
day promises to be full of fun, more time for
physical activity, sportsmanship and good cheer.
This year grade levels will display ISD spirit by having classes choose red, white or blue T-shirts to wear as their team color. Also, each class will be performing cheers from the sidelines while their classmates, as well as members of other grade levels, are competing throughout the day. The enthusiasm, variety and spirit of these cheers will be a strong factor in determining which class earns the coveted Sportsmanship Award, the highest achievement of the day.

Bring your reusable water bottles! Water stations will be available for constant refills.

Hope to see you there!

Mr. Boland & Mr. Bragdon

PILOT LUNCH PROGRAM
SAMPLING FOR PARENTS

Parents, come show your support for the pilot lunch program! Did you know that the PTAC Wellness Committee has been working this year with the GPS Food Services Director to launch a pilot lunch program at North Mianus School featuring healthy, cooked-from-scratch meals?

Samplings will be available May 28, 29 and 30. We NEED your support of these new lunch items so that next year we can offer this pilot menu in full to ALL elementary schools!

Look for flyers in backpacks with more information & how you

can participate. For questions or to volunteer please email                  isdpta.ct@gmail.com

BAND NEWS FOR 3RD GRADE PARENTS

Recently, I met with all 3rd grade students to discuss the ISD band program, and to demonstrate the various band instruments. Every student received a band sign-up form (please email me if you did not receive one). If your child is interested in participating in the band program in 4th grade, please carefully review the form with them, and return it by May 31. Please be sure to list three instrument choices. Thank you!!
